Asian Faces In High Fashion

Nine in a Row.

We know those models who are synonymous with a particular edition of Vogue.
The faces whom people have come to identify and associate with.
The impact and meanings they create and give to the magazine and much more.
Women of a certain kind and that je ne sais quoi. Their magic.

An example of this?
With her ongoing career, one of China's most highly export:

Liú Wén
The happy virus, esteemed and next successor for the Modelmania of Vogue China.

Ever since her first Vogue in her home country,
she's been receiving a cover for the past seven years. Consecutively.
Once a year, twice a year.
And that's not including the supplements, which she have too.

Certainly she's a singular case and have been a hallmark of VC for the past several years.
Even the executive, Angelica Cheung, has something to say recently:
You are our best spokesperson

That pretty much sealed it. To which her ninth cover was, say, predetermined.

*

Though as we all know,
you gotta have people to back you and the confidence that you will prevail.
The attitude matters. And the opportunity has to happen.

For Wen, nothing seems to be stopping her, as if she have it all figured out,
or things just seem to have gone her way.

But realistically it takes more than just a pretty model.
For some, the heart, dedication, mind, professionalism and values go a long way...

In the end, it paid tremendously in her part.

All right. Her cover moments:

Okay, for the fun part, can she make a perfect 10 next year?
Or will her streak be intervened?

We'll find out! ~

Hopefully Wen can pull off her tenth cover, then guess we could see less of her (though won't be complaining if it's the contrary). But let it be OG.

FYI, Du Juan has the most VC of any Chinese/Asian model with twelve actuals. Followed by Liu Wen.

Then there's Fei Fei and Xiao Wen, both six under their belt, who IMO are or will play a similar role like Juan/Wen. Of course they're already staples to the magazine.

Last thing want to say is that we need new blood. We need VC to nurture someone (or two) right now and groom them to be the likes of those four. For real. It's time. Someone with all the qualities and potential for longevity. It'd be interesting to see who that'd be. I mean, we could kinda guess but not definite, given that VC hasn't really utilised a model à la Kloss for VUS or like Liu Wen with multiple eds in one issue, and back-to-back issues. Jing Wen seems to be the most utilised/consistent IMO.

Really want to stress about having newer faces on covers. Starting now. Who should it/they be?

It's here.
Only hours until the revealing of the extravaganza that is VSFS.

This year's roster include Sui He, Ming Xi, Xiao Wen, the newcomer,
and the return of Liu Wen.

How is this lineup?
Yeah, all Chinese, but hey, will take four while we can?

^I'd LOVE to see a Asian VS Angel in the future^_^ (or three:wink::lol: ). I think Liu Wen deserves it but if they decided to choose just one, personally I would want it to be Sui He:heart:. But most likely it would be someone younger that would grow with the brand with a sh!t ton of followers:rolleyes:

There’s a Record Number of Asian Models in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show — Here’s Why

By Hayley FitzPatrick | November 30, 2016

Four Chinese models — Liu Wen, Xi Mengyao, Sui He, and Ju Xiaowen — are set to walk in the 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on Wednesday. Considering the first Victoria’s Secret model of Asian descent did not walk in the retailer’s annual show until 2009, this is a huge step toward inclusivity and racial diversity for Victoria’s Secret.

The four models in this year’s lineup maintain a massive presence on social media and have worked with top designers worldwide. Victoria’s Secret recently posted an image on its Instagram channel of three of the women in Paris with the caption, “Ni hao! @liuwenlw,@mingxi11 & @hesui923 repping China at the #VSFashionShow.”

The shift to a more racially diverse roster of models for the popular show could be reflective of the company’s growing market in China.

Since expanding into the region in 2015, the retailer has gradually increased its presence and seen great success in doing so. Starting out with just 20 concept stores — shops that sold only beauty products and accessories — the company now plans to open its first flagship retail store in Shanghai this year, which will sell lingerie, along with a number of standalone stores. The move is ideal considering the lingerie market in China is extremely profitable and has more than doubled in five years, to $18 billion, according to Mintel Group.

Martin Waters, president of L Brands International, Victoria’s Secret’s parent company, recently revealed just how strong the retailer’s presence is in China at an investors-day event. He shared that an estimated 350 million people in China will watch the upcoming Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, according to Ohio’s Columbus Dispatch.

“Maybe someday we’ll have the fashion show in Shanghai — maybe — because we’re a global brand,” Leslie H. Wexner, the L Brands founder, also shared. “We have demonstrated that we have the best brand-building ability in the world. People who can’t read English, when they see the Victoria’s Secret name, they smile.”

In past years, the lingerie company has received considerable flak for the lack of diversity on the runway in its highly anticipated show. Of the 44 women on the runway in last year’s show, only 13 were women of color, around 30 percent.

This year’s lineup is expected to be its most diverse show yet, with more than 50 women expected to walk. Only two of the 12 models who hold the highly acclaimed “Angel” status are women of color, but with the retailer’s trend toward diversity, it’s only a matter of time before an Asian model is also appointed.

Earlier this month, three of the company’s models, Alessandra Ambrosio, Josephine Skriver, and Sui He, headed to China for Alibaba Group’s 11.11 Global Shopping Festival in Shenzhen. Sending a veteran like Ambrosio to the event further exemplifies how the brand is aiming to grow in the country.

It’s estimated that China’s lingerie market will have retail value of $25 billion by next year and will grow to $33 billion by 2020, according to Euromonitor, so it’s likely that Victoria’s Secret’s investment will only help its business.

Interesting that they've never done a show out of Italy (not even Europe?)! Cool they went to HK. What's their current economic profile there/China/Asia?

And the past couple years they've included Asians in both their women/men campaigns and more presence on their runway. Glad they are being inclusive in that scope. Guess that's one way of doing it. Good nevertheless.

Model, Fei Fei - RTW Pre-Fall 2016, Worldwide, one shot

Mistake. Not RTW.

Anyway think any Asian will be part of the SS17 campaign cast?

Just because there were cheongsam blouses doesn't mean there will be a Chinese, but wouldn't be surprised to see an Asian makes the cast. Given the influx of Asian presence at Prada, seems like they're trying to alleviate (increase?) their economic situation, specifically China, due to their declining/stagnant growth. And hasn't been all that good with some recent reports earlier this year. Could this also explain Fei Fei's exclusives and campaigns? Liu Wen's invite too? Seems pretty strategic on their move.

Like D&G, Prada has been making progress with Asian inclusion too. Especially the past couple of seasons and their campaigns. Hopefully Fei Fei or an Asian gets the campaign too after all what's happening.

Muse | Vogue China | Numéro

We know those models.
Models who've been in the industry a while and didn't get their big break.
That is until later on.

Xiao Xing pretty much exemplify this starting with a blonde transformation
that lead to bluechip shows and working with the big guys both
editorially and campaign-wise.

Heading into her third season after the jackpot,
she still hasn't graced a cover yet.

Hence the following:

1. MUSE:

At the top of my head only Sui He and Zhang Ziyi have covered the publication (any other Asian?).

Well. Xiao Xing's a chameleon. Versatile yet still distinguished. Emotive and talented in print. An ideal muse.

It's the fantasy issue so wanted to give the allure and impression of something dream-like or airy therefore the masthead is blurred a bit and the image has been altered to give her a glow as if she's being transported or she's arrived. And to coincide with the holidays, made the colours festive.

2. VC:

With little appearances in her home country's Vogue (with one ed this year), think it's time to put her on the cover after the suggestions. Not a new face but she's never fronted so why not? She's having a moment and it should be receptive. If not VI then VC it is!

She's pretty much an ice queen in her subzero palace. Perfect, simple colours. Hopefully that wasn't too much blue. Let that emphasise the snow and iciness.

3. NUMERO

Has any Asian covered the magazine? Not to my recollection.

Even though Numero China would've been more probable, let's take the challenge for being the first. But if you see, it'll take a couple years to achieve this? 365 is the magic number for a start.

It's winter. People in general don't cope well with extreme freezing temperature (although we do have real people who can!). And in the midst of a snowstorm, it's chaotic and scary - let's make this a dark one. Xiao Xing's here to punish someone or two, as she banish them with her deadly, lustrous cloths.

Think this is the least executed of the three despite those two being similar.

If anyone wants to share their opinions and/or share their work of xyz cover/campaigns for said model, then post away!

Have something in mind that you want an Asian model to get or should have? Frustrated or confused as to why she/he hasn't got it yet? Here's the place!

Will continue to do this while we can (at the same time make it fun and substantive). ^^ :flower:

Before Du Juan? That I don't know...
