Hubert de Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn - a match made in heaven. Similar ages, the French couturier and American screen star immediately empathised with each other - an intimate relationship that continued into old age.

Givenchy intuitively understood Audrey's petite frame - the perfect foil it would seem for the sophisticated and ladylike look of the late 1950s and early 1960s - tiny waist, full skirt - often with underlay and a simply cut bodice, often collarless to show Audrey's swanlike neck.

In turn, Audrey's iconic movies served as the perfect environment for the ultimate catwalk - raising Givenchy's profile. And perhaps due to the timeless design of both the couture and the movies both are still much admired decades later.

^Well, I would object to the term "petite" used for Audrey--that word connotes "short" and not something else we're not supposed to mention on this forum. Audrey was 5'7"-- that's 3 whole inches above average height for a woman! A LOT of fashion people have started using this word this way, I suppose because they are just used to women being unusually tall, that the meaning slowly shifted for them. But that is dismissive to short women like me. I REALLY hope the meaning hasn't changed for our entire society. Just my opinion.

Anyway, THANKS for the link to the vid--I never get a chance to search for things like that on YouTube. Can't wait to watch it. I think that a major reason why Audrey became and has stayed a fashion icon was her relationship with Givenchy, and I also think when a new actress appears who has a similar bond with a designer and is similar to Audrey's other qualitites, THAT is the actress we can call "the next Audrey Hepburn."

Agreed with you randhrshipper1. I really wish the mods would put an end to the way people on this forum use the word 'petite.' It's being used very obviously to mean thinness and weight. But god forbid I use the word 'curvy' and I get slapped with a warning! But double standards... of course.

Audrey was definitely ahead of her time when she paired with Givenchy and Valentino, but stars who pair up with designers (like say Lawrence and Dior, Lively and Chanel, etc etc) today forget her style was entirely her own. She influenced Givenchy just as much as he did her. She wasn't just an empty muse.

Has anybody ever read any articles about Audrey written especially during her early career? They often describe her as 'scrawny' and mention her tall height. I guess we can't go into detail but its interesting the words used to describe her over time.

I wish nobody would call anybody the 'next Audrey'. Why would anyone think being labeled a 2.0 of the original a compliment.

^^GOOD point, Vanessa, about Audrey inspiring Givenchy as much as he did her. I remember that he created a boatneck neckline for her because she didn't like her collarbone, and it is a fashion staple now.

^That's a great point, too, ScarlettLover--for an actress to really capture something of Audrey's legacy, she will have to be her own persona.
