In the 15 years since the film “Amélie” made her a star, the French actress Audrey Tautou has built up a parallel practice as a photographer. Working alone and using herself as a model, Tautou has captured images that dwell on the nature of public image and constructed identity. The pictures in this slideshow are the first public display of her photographic work, ahead of the exhibition “Audrey Tautou: Superfacial” during the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival in France this July.

Tautou collects books of photography, and cites Martin Parr, Brassaï, Nan Goldin, André Kertész and Francesca Woodman as influences. “I don’t really know why a photo is going to touch me, but that’s what I’m looking for,” she says. “More than aesthetic perfection, I like when I can invent and imagine a little story about it.”

While they may look theatrical, “I’m not at all acting parts in my composed self portraits,” Tautou says. “I think because I’m an actress, my image will always come before me. I am an actress, I am a representation, I think that’s the reason why people think that I am directing myself in a little story and acting a part, but this is not a character.”

“All those photos — it’s me, but I think it’s me with the feeling I have when I could be observed by somebody I don’t know.”

“I’m an actress, but I’m not only an actress,” Tautou says. “This part of me that has grown and grown and grown for all those years was more important for my balance than I’d thought. Now it’s this part of me I want to express and develop. So to me, it’s something very intimate, it’s not a hobby. It’s a way to become complete.”
