Australian Fashion Week threatens to cancel closing show

Stupid move by the Australian Fashion Week organisers

There's a storm in a tea cup currently underway in Melbourne - swimwear house, and resident Rogues, MaraJoara are the talk of the day after Australian Fashion Week organisers reputedly threatened to cancel their show as a result of them using size 8 to 12 models.

As non-conformist as the organisers might have viewed it, the show went ahead as planned and the models (with a few Rogues amongst them), irrespective of their size, all personified beauty.

While the Australian Fashion Week did cave, it hasn't prevented the media from picking up the story. Open the Herald Sun to page 9 and you'll find a full page spread accompanied with a photograph from the night (photo features Michelle from Rogue, congrats to her), talk-back radio station 3AW have make it their focus story of the day and MaraJoara designer Leesa Fogarty has been interviewed, and we hear that even the ABC has picked up on the story!

Frankly Australian Fashion Week should be happy about the controversy, it's one of the few times that the fashion show has appeared to any great degree in the media.

Ah Thanks, i've enjoyed the past Australian Fashion Weeks. They have rather sweet designers. Enjoy the launch party DPD! It sounds pretty good.

:D

You wouldn't believe the massive stink that the use of 'curvy' models has caused. It's been on all the major TV stations in the country, in most of the major papers, and has been on most of the radio stations I've flicked through. As I was involved in the casting I've even been interviewed on Melbourne's top-rating talkback program!

It's absolutely insane! Who cares if a designer wants to go their own way? Let them be unique.

The response to swimwear label MaraJoara's controversial fashion week show has been overwhelmingly positive with support for MaraJoara's actions surfacing across Australia, from health experts, to media outlets, to the general public.

Disappointingly, fashion magazine Vogue Australia has decided to drop their coverage of the MaraJoara show from their website. As pointed out by Vogue Australia users and Rogue Connect members, coverage of the show was put up on their website Thursday morning, but by the afternoon had been removed without explanation.

It's highly disappointing that Vogue Australia chose not to remain impartial to the alleged thread by Australia Fashion Week organisers to scrap the show, instead opting to remove some excellent photos of what was a great show. One is left questioning how a designer's choice of models has any impact on Vogue Australia; and, in turn, exactly what is their real interest here? Wouldn't one expect Vogue Australia to support Australian designers and to provide full, unbiased coverage of an event like Australian Fashion Week?
