After working several years at urban clothing line Rocawear — she's now married to its cofounder, music mogul Damon Dash — designer Rachel Roy launched her own high-end label inspired by her full-bodied fashion idols Ava Gardner and Marilyn Monroe. Roy finds inspiration in both 50s icons, but especially Ava, who she says was the epitome of glamour.

Miss Ava Garter is a burlesque queen for our times. Here she talks about her love of Ava Gardner:

Am I correct in assuming you chose your stage name as an homage to screen goddess Ava Gardner? Why her?

Absolutely true! Gosh, I have a million reasons, I will give you just a few. The most obvious is her sex appeal. Ava was a no apologies woman, and I admire that . In pictures she looked right into the camera. Straight at you, as if to ask you " OK, so what are you gonna do about it?" She got what she wanted but it didn't always make her happy. I know how this feels, men still are hard for me to understand too. She loved deeply and did not mess around when it came to the men she loved. She had a sense of humor about what she did and she always felt that any schmuck could do it....she just got lucky! I just feel that out of the many stars in the sky of Hollywood, is the one that I seem to relate to . I sometimes feel sad for her that she died without having kids , I feel like she would have found the love that she was looking for and really deserved but..... Ah Hollywood. And then there are her clothes!! No one could wear a long, slinky black dress like
Ava. Audrey Hepburn may have invented the LBD, but Ava was all about long and slinky. Plus the amazing red lipstick she wore! No one care wear red lipstick like Ava, honey!

Renowned beauty authority Laura Mercier was raised in Provence and studied at art school in Paris. In 1996 she launched her own make-up range, and her foundation primer is adored by make-up professionals everywhere.

Who do you think of as beautiful?

I am inspired by women who possess character in their face. I remember looking at pictures of actress Ava Gardner and noticing that her eyelids were a bit heavy, which gave her face a sense of mystery and wit, making her even more unforgettable.

If you ever wondered what Old Time Hollywood Icons like Ava Gardner and Liz Taylor used to perfect their glow, wonder no more.2007 marks the 60th anniversary of Max Factor's bestselling stick foundation, Pan Stick. A true beauty classic, the product was used on Ava Gardner and Rita Hayworth in the Forties, and today remains a favourite with Hollywood make-up artists like Pat McGrath, who uses it on supermodels and top actresses around the world.
