I was looking through some old pictures and I was noticing that often a dress isn't that great but it just suits the event perfectly, and other times a celeb will wear a great outfit and it just doesn't suit the event. of course there are rare occasions when the look suit the time and place and everything just comes together, so I thought it might be fun to post pics and talk about what workd and what doesn't and where it works

First of all the dress doesn't work on her (it may have been better on someone taller) and second, she's at a black tie formal event and she looks like she's wearing a wife beater. Granted the globes aren't as formal as the Oscars, but that looks like something to wear to a premiere or the MTV Awards or something

Alicia Silverstone seems to have a great sense of what works where:

at the 2004 BAFTA Awards-very glam
100122051.jpg
In Stella McCartney at the Critics Choice Awards-I love the black and the short skirt and the slits in the sleeves set it apart from the standard LBD, and the red shoes give it a bit of color-she looks like she got dressed up but didn't take herself too seriously.

At the Emmys in Lily et Cie couture by Rita Watnick

Again just right for the occasion (except for the hair, I'm not crazy about that- too sacual for the outfit)

Cameron Diaz

in Emmanuel Ungaro at the 2002 Oscars- She looks good but I don't like the look for the oscars. she doesn't look put together enough for the Oscasrs

2003 Oscars in Prada
This dress isn't as interesting IMO, but more...appropriate. Just wish she'd do something with the hair...

2003 Golden Globes in Chanel
This I think is just right. It glamerous enough for the occasion, but maintains a lightness as well probably because of the short skirt.

Reese Witherspoon

100069244.jpg
at the 2002 Oscars: perfect! she looks so glamourous and right for the occasion
100067822.jpg
at the SAG Awards in Gucci
not bad, just dull-there's no super-strict dress codes at the SAG Awards-she could have had more fun with her out fit.

Those three dresses of camerons are probably my all time favs of hers. I don't find her candid style the best but she sure delivers in awards season.

I didn't think Sienna's MW look was very Oscars-y... she looked great though

I don't remember it. Do you have a pic?

That's because she never has been to the oscars! I think your thinking of another event ckaschie.

Sienna did go to the 2004 academy awards. She wore this off runway dress by Matthew Williamson. The dress is alright but she wore it to the wrong event :innocent:

Yeah, I like the dress, but it doesn't say Oscars to me

Yeah, I agree. It's a nice dress, but it just doesn't say Oscars to me...

oops my bad I couldn't find any matches when searching for "oscars" and sienna but academy awards delivered pretty well lol. I see nothing wrong with it I love a lil variety at the oscars. I prefer it when the stars let their own style shine through instead of wearing the typical prom dress satin type dresses.

I like it when celebs let their own style shine through also, variety is great. But I often see things that just aren't right for the event (over dredd/underdressed/ just not right for the person wearing them) Here's an example of what I mean:
This is Emmy Rossum at the 2004 Oscars:
The dress is different from the stardard Oscar fare, but it's too old for her. It doesn't llok right on a young girl. Also I think the length is a bit awkward it just doesn't suit her or the event.

admittadly it's more of your standard "prom-style" Oscar gown, but it's also more flattering and age-appropriate. She looks like she's going to the Oscars, not her Grandmother's 75th Birthday party.
I do give celebs credit for going against the grain (especuially at a huge event like the Oscars). But if you're going to be different, do it right, IMO. For example, one of my fave Oscar looks (and award show looks in general) is Claire Danes at the 1997 Oscars:
bposcar_a_08.jpg
She stands apart from the huge ballgowns and such, but her look is still flattering, age appropriate, and elegant-she's not oversdressed or underdressed.

the sienna and first emmy rossum pic are from the vanity fair post-oscar party, almost anyone who's anyone in hollywood gets invited to the vanity fair party. the academy awards are reserved (from what i've observed) for the presenters and those nominated. emmy did go to the oscars (red dress) and the vanity fair party(first pic) but sienna's is definately from the vanity fair party. :flower:

Uma Thurman

100123059.jpg
at the 2004 Golden Globes wearing versace- I like this look for the Gobes- it's got a playfullness to it, but it's still really glamourous
100101764.jpg
at the Screen Actor's Guild award in Chanel couture-I think the dress is appropriate for the event, but I'm not crazy about it.
100069236.jpg
at the 2002 Oscars in Jean Paul Gautier-the dress is nice, and appropriate for the Oscars, but I'm not crazy about it on her.
00029f.jpg
at the 2004 Oscars in Christian Lecroix- I liked this better than most people did. It's an interesting dress, she statuesque enough to pull it off, and I think it took guts for her to wear it at a stuffy event like the Oscars can be. But still, it's not my favorite look on her
02f.jpg
at the 2005 Golden Globes in Christian Dior-I though that this was a stunning dress and she looked stunning in it. I don't know if it's quite right for the Globes- I'd have saved it for the Oscars or the closeing night at Cannes...

Jennifer Connelly is kind of a mystery to me. She's sooo beautiful and at some events she looks great, but she cannot dress for award shows.

100122063.jpg
At the Critic's Choice Awards in Roberto Cavalli
100102767.jpg
at the 2003 Oscars in Calvin Klien
100088740.jpg
at the 2003 Golden Globes in Carolina Herrara
100067819.jpg
at the Screen Actors Guild awards in Alexander McQUeen
100069228.jpg
at the 2003 Oscars in Balenciaga
She often looks like she's going to a funereal, not an award show.
