To my , admittedly cynical , mind , both the dress and the price are an utter joke .

The dress comes from the time when BALENCIAGA was HOT , HOT , HOT , and fashion victims would buy ANYTHING Guesquiere , IF THEY COULD FIT INTO IT .

I actually think that we've come a long way since the advent of this dress . Ultra-Luxury has to justify its prices MUCH MUCH more now .

We are actually looking at a piece of history , high-fashion hype just about to crawl up itself , which of course why much of the dress is in RUBBER !!!!

I agree, and think it shows in the way pants are priced. I went to Holt Renfrew yesterday and compared the prices of trousers to those of tops. Exhibit A, Chloe. A silk halter top (that could easily fit into a teacup), well over $1000 cnd. A pair of cuffed wool trousers, just over $600 cnd. Pardon? That left me confused.

Also, I was browsing style.com recently and thought something Tom Ford said about his Fall 2002 Gucci collection described shoppers today very well.
"This is the most worked collection I've ever done at Gucci," he said. "Women are only buying amazing items now. No one's buying anything basic."
