why is balenciaga's main runway line always so absurdly expensive?

If they want to sell 15,000 dollar dresses, why dont they create a main line, and a couture line?

I mean that much for ready to wear is absurd.

i genuinely want to know how Balenciaga price their clothing - the mark up must be astronomical! i hope Nicolas is getting paid well for the job he is doing, although i would bet it will be PPR that are reaping all the benefits

I actually don't have a problem wiht the prices. If it's too expensive compared to the quality of the work, then nobody will buy it. Market rules.

I'd guess it has much to do with tariffs and the strength of the Euro vs. the dollar. Blessed be the poor-n-such: we're living our ideology, at least.

the hell, with the price

jajajaja hopefully, i'm a patterns maker and i know how to sew, i can make a copy of that, jajajaja, but, i agree woth you, i mean, how can anybody think of buying that, and there are a lot of people dying everyday en africa, i'm not refering to give all the money to them, but a little part... oh well!
greetings

with prices at the level it has more to do with the power of the brand than the quality of the garment

Clearly you are paying for a mixture of quality and brand when it comes to Balenciaga. Also, Balenciaga has become known as the epidemy of high-fashion. Not only are the runway peices as such very limited, but they are well known by most who take an interest in fashion.

...and Balenciaga has come to be well known for making bank as well, which alows for such high-fashion and exclusive peices.

They have always said that the biggest chunk of the company's money goes to labor, so although ridiculous, I'm not surprised that it's this much. Remember the pink YSL fluffy thing that was about $35,000?

How much would you price this dress if you could?

That's a recent thing, they've only now become profitable within the past year and a half.

There's actually a small article on this topic in July's Vogue, about demi-couture. Honestly, I do think some of the prices are justified, not necessarily the hideous scuba-dress that started this thread, but some of Balenciaga's more recent outings are deserving of the five-figure price tag. Those cream lace and organza ruffled jackets for spring must have involved a rediculous amount of handwork considering that they were meant to be sold on a rack, even in limited quantity. Apparently the fall collection utilized even more of the atelier's skills with embroidery, draping and sewing. When a rtw garment takes over 100 hours of handwork to complete, I think $20,000 is fair.

i adore balenciaga but 15,000,thats total bullsh*t

With a dress like that, you have to ask yourself 'Will I wear this often?' If someone can honestly say that they will wear that dress more than once, and that they really love it and will pass if down to her daughter or her daughters daughter, then I suppose they are willing to pay for it :ninja:.

I am certainly not one of those people.
