Scott Sternberg's unique packaging.
TIE ONE ON: Band of Outsiders designer Scott Sternberg is tying up Oscar’s red carpet. The Los Angeles-based men’s wear designer, who was an agent at CAA before launching his company three years ago, has sent each of his favorite Oscar nominees and presenters a personalized selection of his signature skinny ties and bow ties. James Bond star Daniel Craig, for example, got a bow tie in Black Watch tartan, while Al Gore received a patriotic tricolor selection of burgundy, navy and white ties. Sternberg packaged his ties in a vintage canvas sack for tool-and-die machinery parts and tagged each one with a message specific to the recipient. George Clooney’s was addressed to “G. Clooney: Presenter,” and contained the cheeky reminder, “Don’t trip.” Martin Scorsese’s gift, meanwhile, was labeled “Nominee/Contender” and offered the explanation, “Ties for luck.” But the best of all went to Bill Condon, who was shut out of the best director category for “Dreamgirls.” “Shafted nominee” read his tag, on which Sternberg added, “F--- them.” Other recipients included such appropriately Outsider-ish industry insiders as Ryan Gosling, Alejandro González Inárritu, Guillermo del Toro, “Little Miss Sunshine” writer Michael Arndt and Brad Pitt. But Sternberg insists he wasn’t trying to grab every single male star by the neck. “I was pretty picky,” he explains. “If I didn’t like the movie, I didn’t send them a tie.” By next year the ladies will get their due, as well: Sternberg is about to launch a Band of Outsiders women’s collection.
