Fade to Black said:It's interesting how you say that, I agree...Nigo would probably look down on those kids severely. Yet Bape kind of has an 'old boys club' mentality to it...when you look at Nigo's own clique, including the Teriyaki Boyz but also their American counterparts who are in with Nigo such as Jay-Z, Pharrell, Swizz Beatz...Nigo willingly dresses them head to toe in his own clothes and adores them for it. Yet when it comes to the mass consumers, he can't stand it. Interesting dichotomy.
Yet there is something to be said about 'flair,' even if the designs themselves are noticeably unremarkable...with all the Pharrell clones decked out in diamond hoodies and ice cream shirts, none of them can really match the originator. And in this sense I can understand the kind of hate one would have towards these consumers...every item of clothing no matter what it is really requires the right person to carry it off. If it doesn't work, then it just makes your clothes look bad.
I remember reading an interview/article about him and he said something about the Japanese youth not knowing where they were going or something like that. I wish I could remember the link because it was interesting he explained his global vision for A Bathing Ape.
