Beirendonck's bags
French luxury luggage specialists Longchamp may have bagged genuis designer Thomas Heatherwick and top girl Tracey Emin for limited edition pieces this season, but this week sees Belgian designer Walter Van Beirendonck launch his own limited edition range for Eastpak. Nothing Van Beirendonck designs - whether it's a menswear collection or a one-off Mirca (see his website for pictures of this, possibly the lairiest car ever) is understated, so it's no surprise that he focused on turning a rucksack into a monster. Walter chose to transform Eastpak's Padded Pak’r bag and, it is said, he "mashed, modelled and moulded the Eastpak bag in a fevered design process akin to that of Dr Frankenstein". There are just 200 of these creatures available in the UK (limited to 2000 across Europe) and exclusive to American Retro and Selfridges. Available in a choice of blue, black, paprika, silver or yellow, each is numbered and signed by Walter and, unlike the Longchamp collaborations with fat price tags, these fun creations are available for just £45. Nice one Walter.
