i think Michelle Williams is my all time favorite... she looked like a classic star in that yellow dress.

I pretty much completely disagree, but all of the links aren´t working for me. I liked Kirsten Dunst in Chanel and the majority of those aren´t terrible enough to be the worst. Maybe it´s because I admire a risk. For example, Heidi´s red Queen of Hearts gown is something she could pull off better than anyone else. I didn´t love it, but she commands it. Although something like Faith Hill´s acid trip of a gown is the kind of thing I really dislike. My least favorite gowns are the ones that look like bad pageantwear and bad prom. Celine Dion is like Tilda Swinton to me in that she just looks like she´s having fun with it and altho it doesn´t quite work, I don´t know, I can´t abhor it.

As for best, I don´t know, that´s a pretty strong word. It takes someone with great presence and most Academy Awatds gowns wear the attendees. I often feel that way about Anne Hathaway. She is a good clothes horse for easy, obviously pretty clothing. Chloe commands her YSL somehow. It would be considered boring on most people. That´s how I feel about Renee´s. Gwyneth´s Zac Posen is good, but doesn´t look right for the Oscars. Angelina´s Marc Bouwer looks like it was made for her. It could look so tacky and cliche on others. After all, he is a tacky designer.

As for my choices, without any research. I remember a Jennifer Connely drab disaster when she won and I´m not sure if it was the GG or the Oscars, but a Natalie Portman looked fantastic in a Grecian Lanvin and I don´t think very much of her to begin with. She´s over-rated as an actress and can´t pull off most of the clothes she goes for.

I agree with all your Worst picks, except Noami Watts. I actually kinda like that one.

As for the best one, some are great picks (Charlize Theron, Hilary Swank in Laroche, Renee Zellweger, Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Michelle Williams, Keira Knightley, Rachel Weisz). But most of them, while pretty good would go nowhere near my ALL TIME BEST (Kate Winslet, Hilary Swank in Versace, Angelina Jolie, Samantha Morton). Cate Blanchett had two MUCH MUCH better choices from 99 and 00 when she wore those black gowns. And Nicole Kidman's Gaultier is just gross.

I'd post my own list but I don't have pictures to back it up, lol.

I will say this though - ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES. I dislike KD, but everything looked perfect here from the hair to the makeup to the dress. LOVE IT.

i think heidi looked great, but, god, faith hill was a major offense.
when diane keaton wore the charlie chaplin get up, i actually liked it. it was different for sure, but i found the competing prints fun. hmm!

Maybe it´s because I admire a risk.

Same here, even though a lot of my favorites are kind of simple. The red carpet can be so horribly dull.
No worst dressed list from me.
Best dressed list (Random order:(
I agree with the yellow Michelle Williams dress and Marion Cotillard.
the black lace dress Kirsten wore that I'm pretty sure was Chanel if I remember correctly. (and I didn't mind the one people insisted "needed" the belt)
Sofia Coppola in Marc Jacobs
Tilda Swinton in Lanvin
Natalie Portman in a dress I'm pretty positive is also Lanvin
maybe Penelope Cruz from the 2001 Oscars.
I feel somewhat tempted to include Bjork in the famous swan dress just for the fun of it.
I would list more but I don't know who else I feel like looking up and I'm not 100% sure about some I might consider listing.

Oh, I actually loved Bjork's dress. It was an experiment, and a successful one at that.

I forgot to add a couple:

Best: At the 1997 Oscars, Nicole Kidman again in Dior Couture (makes me miss her fashionista days...she still dresses good now, but 'good' is as far as it goes).

Worst: Jennifer Connelly in 2002. Dull, dull, dull. I'm so glad her style has improved ever since (in contrast to Kidman, funnily enough).

Charlize's Dior with the bow was fantastic - it was everything that it was supposed to be.

Hillary Swank's Laroche was simply horrid from the front. I mean, truly awful I think. It looked backwards anyways.

Celine's suit is Dior I think. Gimmick-y times of fashion. It seemed appropriate at the time I guess.

Uma's Lacroix would be better if it had no sleeves in that drastic of a volume. Also, the vest could have been handled a little better. Maybe apply the embroidery directly on the gown, and lose the vest-like whatever-ness. The fabric, otherwise, looked fantastic on her skin.

Halle's Saab dress looked like it was someone's curtains at some point of its life - it looked like upholstery fabric. I never understood what all the fuss was about that piece, which also looked so cheap.

I hate Julia's Valentino (his most famous gown, in some ways) and I love Angelina's Versace. It was dramatic. Julia looked like a highway map, and the back was even worse with all those white 'lines' collapsing on top of each other. I mean... why?

I hated that pink monstrosity Natalie Portman wore this year -what was it, Rodarte??? It looked like something you can buy from one of those hideous dress shops on 7th Avenue. Truly prom with the cheap draping and beads and stuff. And everyone loved it.

Also Miley's dress, which was a cheap copy of Dior's Juno dress - perhaps the greatest dress ever created. It was a copy - down to the color of the beads. Some people have no shame.

I really like Gwyn's Zac and Nicole's Valentino. Both were so sexy, and regal at the same time. I saw the Zac one in black in some store, and it is truly a spectacular dress.

I also HATED what JLo wore this year - that gold gown. I mean, you are 40, cover it up a little. That dress would only work on someone like Daria, or Gisele. Plus, it wasn't even a good dress from the back.

I love Gisele's Dior gown, the one she wore when she was accompanying Leo. I loved that couture show, I loved that empire dress, and I loved her in it. She looked perfect. Another dress that showed Galliano's superiority.

Also Renee in Carolina Herrera.

Wow, I forgot I made this thread. I was also a bit stupid for posting links. :ninja: I actually disagree with some of the worst picks I made two years ago! I now love Gwyneth Paltrow in McQueen (why did I say Lacroix?!), Naomi Watts in Givenchy Couture, Cameron Diaz in Ungaro Couture, Kiki Dunst in Chanel Couture and I don't mind Meryl Streep in Prada. MOST OF ALL, I disagree with Charlize Theron in Dior. I loathed that dress at first, but now I looooove it. I kind of appreciate the craziness of Uma Thurman's Lacroix.

For best, I think I'd ditch Anne Hathaway in Marchesa, Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive, Charlize Theron in Vera Wang and Hilary Swank in Atelier Versace. Those are nice looks, but not best worthy. Add Liv Tyler in Givenchy, Nicole Kidman in Gaultier, Uma Thurman in Prada and Chanel, Renée Zellweger in Carolina Herrera, Charlize Theron in Dior (2006) and Penélope Cruz in Atelier Versace.

I figured it might be fun to return to this thread with some more of our favorite Oscar style, including stuff from the past few years. Off the top of my head these are some all time faves:

Grace Kelly wearing Edith Head in 1955 (thevintagefair.blogspot.com)

Lauren Hutton in Halston 1975 (rawtherunusual.com)

I wish I could find a full length shot of this one

Uma Thurman in Prada in 1995 (nogoodforme.filmstills.org)

Winona Ryder in? 1996 (sogorgeouslybeautiful.blogspot)

Nicole Kidman in John Galliano, 1997 (living.msn.com)

Claire Danes in Narciso Rodriguez in 1997 (diytheme.com)

Cate Blanchett in John Galliano, 1999 (Parperdollprincess.wordpress)

Reese Witherspoon in Valentino 2002 (ew.com)

Kate Hudson in Versace 2003 (bashny.net)

Hilary Swank in Guy Laroche in 2005 (thefrontpage.blogspot)

Jessica Alba in Versace (2006) (Hollywire.com)

Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive in 2007 (thecultureconcept.com)

Natalie Portman in Rodarte in 2009 (nickysragtales.com)

^Thanks! That's a great site, but I definitely don't agree with all their picks.

For example I always found the green Valentino that Jennifer Lopez work in 2007 to be a bit ... stuffy. Like it was made for an 87 year old (ladauphinestyle.com)

I actually really like Jean Dresses one much better if we're going for green (vogue.com)

However I also really like the Badgley Mischka dress she wore in 1997 (ew.com)

I also like this one from 1999- also by Badgley Mischka (spokeo.com)

It's also interesting how dated the pink Ralph Lauren dress that Gwenyth wore in 1999 has become. I remember at the time people were drooling over it. (buzzfeed.com)

There are still elements I like but I want to steam out some of those wrinkles, and refit it so it's not hanging on her!
As far as Gwenyth goes I'm partial to her 2007 Zac Posen number (marieclaire.com)

I also think she did the spaghetti straps much better in Calvin Klein in 1996

I also disagree with their picks for Kate Winslet. I like the Valentino she wore in 2007 but it was a bit boring (fabsugar).

She tends to play it very safe at the Oscars. I actually liked the dress she wore in 1998. It was a bit too costumey but the color was gorgeous (ibtimes.com)

I also like the dress she wore in 1996. She goes against the "redheads shouldn't wear pink rule" in Vivianne Westwood and pulls it off. Plus I like the wrap (zibio.com)

I prefer her doing the bubblegum pink ballgown thing to Gwyneth actually.

I'll also add that Helena Bonham Carter can look stunning for the Oscars when she doesn't treat it like a Halloween party. This is 1998 (spokeo.com)

It'd be fun to update this thread.
