Like others have said, I miss the magic that runways shows used to have. From the hair to the makeup to the styling, it used to pull you in to their world, even if just for 10-15 minutes.

I agree with the 2012 comment as well, that's when I found myself becoming fatigued with fashion and also feeling like the magic world was disappearing. Seasonal trends were dying out, and it was getting more and more bland.

Another fave of mine's is Stefano's last collection for YSL menswear, fall 2012. It was primarily black suiting and outerwear, with some decorative leather touches thrown in, all tailored to perfection. I'll always believe that his menswear w/ YSL and Zegna didn't get the respect that it deserved. (src: nytimes, vintagesunday, hypebeast, WWD)

A fantastic collection indeed. Probably his best ever menswear and his sexiest.
Unfortunately the collection was killed as Hedi took over because he started to introduce his permanent collection and campaigns of his vision.
Everything was executed in this collection with a high level of details. Which wasn’t necessarily the case seasons prior. He wanted to go with a bang and he did!

It might snow tomorrow, so perhaps I’ll stay in & revisit those collections again. I remember Tom’s YSL men’s didn’t spark much interest w/ me then, but maybe after 20 years, I might see things differently. Maybe.

Another fave of mines: Lanvin men’s 2011. The cut & textures of the materials are top-notch. This was Lukas Ossendrijver at his best. Hell, even the jewelry looked good (even if it does look like accessories for the Dothraki…iykyk). src: firstview

I think I’m too dumb and unqualified right now to proclaim or even understand what constitutes as best, but in terms of aesthetics and directionality in pop culture I have to agree with @Phuel, Dior Homme FW 06 is pretty up there for menswear.

^^^I will possess every single piece from "These Gray Days" one day...

(...Oh Lucas…

His Lanvin was such a staple of my own fashion growth— alongside Neil Barrett’s. But unlike the greater talents like Tom/Miuccia/Hedi/Helmut, they never impacted and imprinted on me. And when they were left behind once their times were over, they never were missed, sadly: Not because they were untalented, but simply I didn't notice they were gone. I still wear Lucas’ Lanvin and Neil Barrett, but I never realize I’m wearing Lanvin and Neil Barrett, unlike when I still wear OG Helmut, HEcdi's Dior and Prada. I suppose that’s what separates the Greats from the mere designer— as talented as Lucas and Neil were. Lucas' Lanvin had so many solid collections during his time, but I can't envision a single one of them the way a Tom's Gucci showing or Gaultier's presentation remained burned in my mind.)

I remember one show from Tom Ford at YDL for menswear. Maybe one of the best collection I was lucky to attend. The FW2002. The oversized volumes, the music, it’s was quite stunning.
I liked a certain formality in menswear so I have always found that collection superb.

Menswear was such a niche in the early 2000 and I don’t think that at the time YSL was that high. And Tom’s silhouette at the time was intentionally the opposite of Hedi at Dior Homme. It was quite a niche non? Very Art Directors, older men. The younger crowd was more into Dior Homme, APC, Helmut Lang…etc.

The last few collections of Tom at YSL we’re quite close to the very sartorial style of Stefano. Much like at Gucci with John Ray.
More classic jet set.

Maybe you should take a look indeed.

Omg Lavin by Lucas 🥹🥹🥹🥹 and his castings were 💔

That was beyond chic and I’m not even into menswear.

Sometimes I’m like … after all those geniuses whats the point of even trying anymore?

If you know you can’t get close to that level of perfection why even bother.

No one mentioned anything by MGC, Anthony, Blazy, JW, PPP, Sarah B, Demna… And many of them were working 10 years ago.

^^^ Oftentimes, designers of yesteryear and the aura that permeates them is also so heavily created by the people that surround, and are attracted to their design vision in a very natural, genuine manner. So their clout, their status, their relevance, feels well earned and not bought. And unfortunately, the newer ones you’ve thrown up are surrounded by paid ambassadors of their corporate handlers. And besides being more strategic merchandisers than daring creative design visionaries, their branding associations with stars, are just starightup bought. Going back to Jennifer Lawrence dismissing her Oscar gown as “some designer” when she knows very well who the designer is because— why wouldn’t you know what brand your multi-million dollar contract obligates you to wear for such a high profile event; to all the Kpoptarts looking as convincingly soulless department-store mannequins in their contracted ambassadors' designated outfits; to all the paid ambassadors at Anthony’s YSL showing that’s as convincing as all the cool kids only going to that one rich dork’s party because of the open bar and catered food; to Demna’s posse of social media parasites that will gladly move on to their next leaching once his status dims, there’s no sincerity, no support, and not even a connection between these people to these brands.

And I like Maria Grazia and Demna. But they’re just merchandisers.

It’s also a question of generation, personal taste, real aesthetic shocks and personal sensibilities.
Nobody mentioned Margiela either. The spring 2007 collection was quite an iconic and revealing moment for me (but didn’t have time to make an endless list). There’s very few Gaultier or Helmut Lang also. Those are iconic designers with iconic, game changing collections.

For me MGC doesn’t have an iconic show at Dior. She had moments. PPP had amazing Couture shows but I’m sure they are all blending on everybody’s mind because once he found that formula, he pressed it to death.

I still think their Avatar collection for Valentino was stunning. Again an aesthetic shock despite it rigorous classicism.

Demna’s first collection for Balenciaga was a fantastic collection. A game changer and something that he won’t ever top unfortunately. The same for Michele’s Gucci but it’s maybe too soon to appreciate their work while we are still trying hard to move on from their aesthetic.

Blazy’s second collection for BV was stunning but it was 3 years ago? A bit too soon to appreciate it in terms of impact and in his body of work as a solo act.

Sarah Burton’s first McQueen collection was stunning too. But too soon again?

I feel like what we can see on the lists are designers who have left a mark on the industry. Not so much people who are still building something.

I could have added Dries too. SS2009, FW2010 are my favorite collections from him. I don’t know if they left so much of an impact to be best collections of all time though.

i did mention sarahs f/w 2013 collection. it was so dreamy, a lot of her first collections from mcqueen were very nice. But she suffered from being the one to succeed a once in a lifetime talent.

Surprised not a single Yohji collection was mentioned. Adding my favorite menswear show from him, as well as the one he seems to reference the most
Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme SS1996:
