From Comics to Movies - "Betty & Veronica"

from Miramax Films

New York - July 23, 2003

Miramax Films and Archie Comics Entertainment LLC are teaming up to co-produce a major live action theatrical motion picture based on the popular comic book icons "Betty & Veronica." The announcement was made by Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein and Archie Comics Entertainment President Allan Grafman. "The demand for youth-oriented entertainment based on well-known character properties continues to soar in the feature marketplace," said Harvey Weinstein. "With more than six decades of unparalleled success in the teen marketplace, Betty, Veronica, Archie, Jughead and the rest of the original Riverdale characters have all the elements to become a highly successful film franchise."

"We are delighted to join forces with Miramax for the production of 'Betty & Veronica,'" said Allan Grafman, President of Archie Comics Entertainment. "Harvey Weinstein and his Miramax executive team demonstrated tremendous enthusiasm for the project along with an impressive understanding of the property's full potential across film, television, live stage and all other media."

CEO Chuck Grimes will oversee the production on behalf of Archie Comics Entertainment and Grafman will serve as an executive producer. Michael Silberkleit and Richard Goldwater will serve as associate producers.

Michelle Raimo, senior vice president of production and development, will oversee the production on behalf of Miramax, with Meryl Poster, co-president of production.

Charles Layton, executive vice president, office of the co-chairmen, and Timothy Schmidt, vice president of business and legal affairs, negotiated the agreement on behalf of Miramax. Grimes and Grafman negotiated on behalf of Archie Comics Entertainment.

The announcement of the motion picture based on the perennially popular teen duo "Betty & Veronica" comes only four months after Archie Comics Entertainment was co-founded as the entertainment and licensing arm of leading comic book publisher Archie Comic Publications, Inc. by Michael Silberkleit and Richard Goldwater along with Grimes and Grafman.

The Archie characters first appeared in an Archie comic book published in 1941. More than 60 years later, Betty, Veronica, Archie, Jughead and friends remain a staple of entertainment for readers the world over with timeless tales of the trials, tribulations and triumphs of teenagers. Role models to millions, Betty & Veronica, Archie and Jughead have come to represent the fads, fashions and attitudes of contemporary youth.

Oh no....... That was my favorite comic book growing up.... I hope they will be careful making it all true to the book...... and cast great actors/actresses.......

Oh wow, I'm really excited to see what they do.....it was a favorite of mine as well.

Archie comics was one of my favorites. I am excited about this movie also...I hope Archie ends up with Veronica.

Ohh cool. I had way too many of these growing up.

I would love to see Lindsay Lohan as Veronica and Lizzie Maguire as Betty.
or if they try to appeal to an older audience, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston.
heehee.

Love the Archie comics as well.. But I always wanted Betty to get Archie. But if we are going to compare them to Jen & Ang.. I would have to go for Veronica then.

Me and my best friend call each other Betty and Veronica (I'm Veronica)...I'm so excited for this!

i think angelina jolie makes a perfect betty. Among the younger actresses maybe Rachael Bilson

uh oh. I think its going to be really hard to get this right. I smell some exec somewhere deciding to try and 'reinvent' the personalities. ie, betty is blonde, so i could see them possibly doing her up as a bit dumb, which would be just horriffic. and making veronica nicer over-all (she had her nice moments, but still)

oh well, time will tell. but a lot of the time, i am disappointed with stuff like this. they seem to get it wrong soo much of the time! i think that movies like this should have a panel of fans to help steer them in the right direction

^ I agree. I hope they take their time and make it as good as they possibly can. This was my favourite comic growing up and it still is today. I have stacks and stacks of them stashed under my bed. Hehe. But I'm sure if they put lots of effort into this that it can be great! I look forward to the outcome.

Me too! I have always preferred Betty. Can't wait to hear the casting.

Oh I don't know, I really wanted Betty to get Archie when I was younger.
But now I'll rather root for Veronica Lodge. :innocent:
