Photography runs in the family for Bibi Borthwick, whose candid images and altruistic nature have made her an industry favourite
AGE 27
LOCATION New York, United States
As the daughter of fashion designer Maria Cornejo and photographer Mark Borthwick, Bibi Cornejo Borthwick grew up around cameras – it was only ever going to be a matter of time before she stepped behind one herself. When she first started taking photos, aged 14, there were few surprised faces.
Sure, while she may have benefitted from a head start – and the occasional bit of mentoring from her father – Borthwick’s a celebrated young photographer in her own right, firmly embedded in photography’s next-gen with her, pensive, unfettered images of human interaction and the environment. The 25-year-old has snapped portraits of notables such as A$AP Rocky, James Blake, Thom Browne, Venus X and Solange, with credits at Pop Magazine, Vogue Netherlands, L'officiel Hommes, T Magazine AnOther and Dazed to her name, too.
Alongside friend and fellow New Yorker Karen Dayana Gallo, Borthwick is also the founder of Bellies, a unisex sneakers line that works to feed and educate hungry children in America. For every pair of shoes sold, Bellies “feeds a belly”, working to nourish inner city areas while educating communities on the importance of nutrition in a bid to eliminate child hunger in America.
With a following of 11.9k on Instagram and an intimate, ever-growing film portfolio, Borthwick is doing her famous name no harm. At the speed she’s moving, papa might soon be looking over his shoulder.
