i-Profile: Billie Turnbull
Little Billie Turnbull is the live and lithe, fresh-faced London based model who shaved her head, pierced her septum and got braces. Billie is beautiful, but she doesn’t know it.
Describing herself as interesting as opposed to pretty, first scouted in Camden whilst just minding her own business, hanging out with her mates when she was going through her ‘emo’ phase, Billie Turnbull is a straight-up tomboy with a free spirit. Immediately striking, all doe-eyed and elfin like, Billie’s au naturel look is effortlessly English. 5’7″ with a 23 inch waist and platinum crew cut, she is pale skinned, slight and delicately innocent, possessing a confident but fragile quality which feels rare and fleeting. Verging upon adulthood, Billie is neither a child nor a woman, she straddles the two unafraid to find out who she will become. Signed as a new face to Select, Billie is fascinating the fashion world. i-D Online caught up with the self-professed ‘waste of time and energy’ to find out what all the fuss is about.
Why did you decide to shave your head?
My sister was doing a cast of my face with alginate for an art project and it trickled into my hair and hardened. After a few hours trying everything from peanut butter to putting my head in the freezer I decided the only thing to do was shave it out.
What did your Mum say?
She was happy, she wanted boys not girls and has always projected that on me, I’ve spent most of my life with short hair, boys’ clothes and one earring so it wasn’t a big change.
Describe a typical day in the life of Billie?
These days I’m usually either in school or hospital, I get tonsillitis frequently and they won’t take the buggers out. It’s not a very glamorous life.
What have you been listening to on your iPod recently?
The other day I was really grumpy so I started listening to Hanson, and I haven’t been able to stop since. They remind me of car journeys as a kid.
Who is your hero?
My year six teacher, Anne Curley.
What’s in your wardrobe right now?
Lots of kilts and little jumpers.
What are your hopes for the future?
To make enough money to get a nice flat and a puppy.
