B is for Bollywood
The first day of Lakmé Fashion Week (LFW) was so star-studded that some press grumbled that the event should be re-named "Bollywood Fashion Week." Designer Rocky S. got the crowd going by casting hunky heart throb Jon Abraham in his show. Next came sometime model, talk show host, soon-to-be director and—when he has time—fashion designer Manish Malhotra. The Renaissance man brought the house down when he took his bow with Bollywood Brahmins Preity Zinta and Kajol(left). Designer Wendell Rodricks took a different approach, bypassing screen stars in favor of a cameo appearance by cricketer Aqib Afzaal.
D is for Debuts
Standouts among Lakmé’s seven “emerging designers” were Surily Goel and Anupama Dayal. Mumbai-based Goel showed a sunny collection that celebrated color and beachy shell embellishments (far left)—perhaps it was influenced by her training at L.A.’s Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Dayal, in contrast, delivered “earthy glam” (near left) with folksy pieces, many of them block-printed by hand. Look for them on Chelsea Clinton: her father, Bill, bought some of Dayal’s skirts on a trip to the designer’s native Delhi.

I is for Indigo
Some things only get better with age. Indigo, listed by Condé Nast Traveler as one of the 60 best restaurants in the world, is one of them. Located in a turn-of-the-century bungalow, it’s a favorite of Bollywood and the Page Three (Mumbai’s version of Page Six) contingent alike, some of whom helped the restaurant’s owners, Malini and Rahul Akerkar, celebrate their “little baby’s” seventh anniversary at the conclusion of LFW.

J is for Savio Jon
The hems on Goan designer (and Wendell Rodricks disciple) Savio Jon’s pleated bubble dresses bobbed up and down like slinkies, but his car wash frocks were refreshingly light. The same goes for his drop-waist jumpers, which balanced volume and flou superbly.

L is for Love
Elizabeth and Arun aren’t the only power couple in town. When Preity Zinta sat in the front row with her business tycoon boyfriend, Ness Wadia, it made front page news, as did director and part-time model Salman Khan’s gallant gesture: kissing Zinta’s hand as he walked the runway for Surily Goel.
