Braces...trendy??

Hi all, while browsing this forum i noticed that having braces is quite common among models. This came as a bit of a surprise to me, as i thought that models had to be beyond perfection. But what suprised me even more is that most of the braced models chose the traditional metal kind, instead of something less noticeable which might be available these days.
So, are braces becoming a sort of trend?? How many of you modelling have them?? Do they by any chance interfere with you work in the fashion biz??

First, not ALL models are Gemma or Natalia. They can't afford the very expensive braces, so they have to use the metal kind. Second, not really, braces don't affect your modeling career as much. If you notice (and I'm sure you do), how many times models ACTUALLY smile in a photo??? They mostly half-open (less than half even) their mouth or shut it! Plus, there is always photo retouching to erase braces. Believe it or not, some actually LOOK BETTER with braces. Their face seem less hollow, more doll-like. The problem is runway work. And the biggest one is when they have their braces taken out => their look might change.

i would not say that braces are becoming a trend... a lot of the models are fairly young... we just happen to get them at a time where they're starting to wear braces... I will never see them as being trendy, but rather as.. a way to get straight teeth.

Theres always the random models in magazines like YM or Seventeen that have the big smile full of braces. They aren't high fashion models....that ive ever noticed?

I wanted braces in middle school though. All of my friends had them and I thought the multi colored bands were cool.

I've never seen a model with braces .... the two don't seem to go hand in hand.I would LOVE to get Invisalign clear aligners though and I'm sure models have used those!

I don't think they are. I have braces at 20 because the first orthodontist ruined my teeth so bad I might need an operation later on in life and no-one thinks I am cool or trendy; they just think I am 14. ¬_¬

Tushka - I read on a professional's website that the invisalign things aren't as good as braces are for correcting teeth. Pity because if they did I wouldn't have to suffer for another 2 years due to someone else's mistakes. Plastic retainers are a lot less painful than a mouth full of metal.

i think braces are hardly fashionable, more of a need than want perhaps.
i guess the only fashionable thing about it was when gwen stefani had them on as accessories with her flaming pink hair.
braces have also warranted a mention in this months Elle US as some sort of new procedure in lieu of plastic surgery to change face shapes.
that's about all i believe...

I've only seen one model with braces, it was either Ruslana or Vlada. But that was a good year ago, they definetly dont have them anymore. Models only get braces to correct their teeth, usually before they are put out into the industry at full force.

And alot of people choose to get the metal ones, because often times the porcelain ones are a weird shade of creme, making your teeth look dirty, theyre also weaker. Or invisalign, the retainer style orthodontics does not work in every case.

Hmmm I'm 25 and Invisalign doesn't work for my case.
I can only choose between metal, ceramic(those offwhite ones) or no braces.

Since my teeth are not that bad (overbite and small overlap of my front teeth) I don't even know if I want any... I will be applying for work in a few months in a professional field, I don't want to look like a "young brat".... and I don't think it impresses the guys either!!!
Undecided ....

I think that "young brat" thing doesn´t work anymore. People nowadays wear braces at any age.

As for the guys, i don´t think it plays that bad in your favor. I mean, who cares, it´s a thing as many and people often don+t care as much as we do.

Besides, in the meantime, you will probably have a gorgeous smile prior to have the bf of your dreams

Go ahead and think more in yourself and not that much on others (although i understand you)

Everbody in my high school wears braces... I used to wear braces a couple years ago...
But I don't see why I should become a trend, braces are a painful necessity- not something you should get because so many others are...
