A model’s life, apparently, is better as a blonde.
Cameron Corrigan’s decision to dye her locks platinum for New York Fashion Week, which starts today, is already paying off.
The Medfield native already has been booked for Alice + Olivia’s fall 2013 presentation as well as “Project Runway’s” finalists’ catwalks.
“They want me to be more edgy,” said Corrigan, who has been dashing to casting calls nonstop since her booking agent convinced her to make the change. “It’s getting crazier.”
The 19-year-old had been working as a light brunette — her natural color — since she started modeling for Model Club Inc. in Boston five years ago. Model Club owner Tim Ayers said the shocking change is “quite impressive,” but he’s not sure “it’d fly in Boston,” even with his fashion-forward clients such as Rue La La.
Initially, the platinum was too much for Corrigan, who said she walked home from the hair salon in tears.
“It was so traumatic. It was super, super bright,” she said. “When they took out the foils and my hair was white, I didn’t actually realize what platinum blond was.”
That was three weeks ago, and now Corrigan has gotten used to the stares at the supermarket — and even being mistaken for Gwen Stefani.
“Now I kind of get into it character-wise,” she said.
The electrifying hair is the most visible change for the leggy 5-foot-10-inch model, but Corrigan has been intensifying all aspects of her modeling life.
Corrigan hopes all her hard work translates into financial success this season. She is saving to buy her own apartment.
But caring for those blond tresses comes with its own expense. “It’s way more work than I thought,” she said. “I bought all these oils and shampoos because of the dryness.”
Ayers said past clients don’t seem put off by the hair. Target booked her last weekend, and designers are giving her a great reception as well.
“In some ways, it just seemed like luck,” he said. “People are intrigued by her, and it gets others wanting to meet her.” bostonherald.com
