A spirit of empowerment dominated the Malandrino resort show Tuesday at MoMA, hosted by Mary J. Blige to benefit The Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now. Before the models hit the runway, Blige recalled meeting Catherine Malandrino 10 years ago and immediately recognizing her genuineness. “I thought, ‘Is there anyone in the fashion industry like you?’” Blige said. “I’m not one to judge, but there are so many shallow people out there.”
Attendees, including Estelle (whose own signature capsule collection will be sold at her concerts this fall) and Loulou de la Falaise, gathered in the museum’s atrium to view the looks, which included tribal-printed caftans adorned with stunning beadwork and sexy body-con dresses, as well as embellished leather vests and jackets shown mostly with sarong pants. Ticket sales from the event benefited tuition-strapped, college-bound Bronx teenagers. Having seen women “suffocated, desecrated, stomped on and literally smacked” when she was growing up, Blige said: “My mission is to have women know they never have to suffer again.”
