Cecilia Bonstrom, head design in Zadig and Voltaire
Cecilia Bonstrom was “very scared” when she became Zadig & Voltaire’s artistic director.
The former model began working for the design house in 2003 and three years later she was promoted. She was concerned she didn’t have enough experience at the time, but hopes that wasn’t too apparent to others.
“I’m the sort of person who prefers to start from the bottom and work my way up, as there’s less pressure, so I was very scared. I’m sure I made millions of mistakes at first, but, luckily, I don’t think anyone noticed!” she laughed to British magazine InStyle.
Cecilia was a model for many years before she switched things up. She is proud of how she went about changing things – the star created a mood board for Zadig & Voltaire and was hired off the back of it.
“I didn’t know if I had it in me. Then in 2003 it was like a light bulb had been switched on. I thought, ‘I’ve had 15 years of modelling. Now I want to learn something.’ I showed Zadig & Voltaire my ideas and they said, ‘OK, join us,’” she explained.
Fashion has always been in the star’s blood. She learnt to love clothes from her mother, who took pleasure in picking the perfect pieces for Cecilia when she was little.
“Growing up my mother had a lot of fun dressing up me and my twin sister,” she laughed. “Long lace dresses and white hats, or black turtlenecks with mini Burberry trench coats. I loved it.”
Although Cecilia knows trends are important, they aren’t the bread and butter of Zadig & Voltaire. She likes to create pieces which look trendy but will also work for years at a time, especially as it’s fun for her to see how women style the items.
It helps that the model has such a clear idea of who wears her clothes.
“She’s an active woman who wants to stay stylish, but in a way that’s effortless, not as if she’s been in front of a mirror for hours,” she explained.
