A Model From Day 1

With a name like Chanel Iman, a career in fashion would seem not only destiny, but also a birthright.

“All of my life, I wanted to be a model,” she said last week in Paris, taking a break at a cafe near the Tuileries famous for its sweets. Chanel Iman Robinson, who is making the rounds for the first time this season, walked for Valentino, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen, and before that appeared at shows in Milan and New York. Yet there was a sense that Ms. Robinson — only 15, and a model who relishes the grueling hours of fittings and extreme makeup treatments with endearing naïveté — was not quite aware of the scope of her breakthrough.

There was the photo shoot where, after lunch, she asked the photographer how much she owed him for a sandwich. Or the fitting with Valentino, after which she described meeting someone important looking, who was orange. On the way back from every turn on the catwalk, Chanel Iman winked to one person in the audience at random. Kanye West, the rapper, began seeking her out after shows to hear of her latest adventures.

“I was at Stella McCartney’s show,” she said, “and I’m dying to go to the bathroom, and so I went up to this guy and asked: ‘Do you work here? Do you know where the bathroom is?’ I didn’t know it was Paul McCartney! I mean, I know who Paul McCartney is, but I didn’t know what he looked like.”

She has studied the poses of models in fashion magazines since she was a toddler in Los Angeles. She practiced her walk in front of a mirror while listening to Madonna. In the first grade, she dressed for Halloween as a fashion model, strutting in the schoolyard with red lipstick and plastic heels she bought at Toys “R” Us. Her name is a combination of her mother’s favorite designer and that of a cousin who was named after the model Iman.

At first, the other models called her Chopsticks, because she is one-quarter Korean and naturally skinny. (For the record, she made fast work of a strawberry and custard pastry.) But after Ms. Robinson suffered a wardrobe malfunction at a Paris show, she became known as Chanipple. She took the teasing in stride, expecting this sort of thing to happen in any career with legs.

oblivous, i know when i was 15 i wasnt that immature, but thats just me...

that asrticle is great--i am glad she is getting press.. but omigoodness , she is turning eighteen soon. why do they have to lie like that ALL the time?

to make her seem more sellable. chanel told me she was 17---they are a mess. for some reason its real important to pretend all models are 15, and i have this irking suspicion most are in their early twenties.
if she is 15, then she has this long shelf life in front her her---another reason for the media to swarm aroubd her.

But a 2 year difference? It's not as if 17 is old. I don't know ...

It is a bit sketch... she sounds stupid, not naiive. :innocent:

i agree, but i thought i would sound harsh, how long was she in school for before she became a model...

So not knowing what Paul McCartney and Valentino look like amounts to being 'stupid'?
