Hey has anyone ever had a chemical peel on their face?

Where you get it done and then a few days later your top layer of skin ( pretty much just) falls off...

I'm interested in it but i thought i'd get everyone elses opinion...

Hi--
I'm an esthetician and I receive and perform peels;) Your skin WILL NOT fall off in a layer from your face! That kind of stuff is for the movies and on TV. The acid (usually glycolic or lactic) works to loosen the "cement" holding your cells together in your skin-- this cement is made of lipids, proteins, etc.- so your skin with slough off more quickly. Getting regular peels is a way to speed up your cell turnover (meanign the time it takes for cells "born" in the basal layer of the skin to reach the surface. Cell turnover is about 15 days for babies (hence, the soft, soft, new skin) and it is 2-3x longers or us, as problem-skinned adults. You will probably feel some tingling or stinging while the peel is on your face, and maybe some mild redness, but that should be it! You should not be bed-ridden or look abused ;) The skin cells you lose will be invisible, just like the cells you are losing constantly throughout the day, every other day of your life. For post-care, Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen,, sunscreen << VERY important for post-peel. You can really see results with a few sessions of peels. Love them! Don't be afraid -- they are really not as scary as they sound:flower:

PS- you can do very deep TCA or phenol peel at the dermatologist or plastic surgeon. They can get a little Frankenstein, but they are for more serious conditions and are MUCH riskier!

hehe thanks for that- i didnt literally mean fall off- i just didnt know how to explain it..
Yeah i knew you had to stay out of the sun which i would want to do anyway

how much do they cost do you know?

Hey, I just had one last friday (5 days ago). What I had was, I think It's called salicyl acid peel. I had it done at a dermatological clinic. I came out of there with a bright red and oily face (oily, due to the cream they put on my face right after the peel). The next day, my face started to feel very tight, and 2 days later it started to peel. The peeling is most visible after washing your face in the morning. It's not as annoying as I thought it would be, and I don't look scary either :p Now, my face is much more smooth and some acne scars have gone away....but i think i might have a few more as one is not enough for me. The peeling is almost over, and I just keep on applying sunscreen on. The costs...well I'm from eastern europe, so i'm not sure if I will be of much help...but, it would be about 25 euro's (then again eastern europe, is still very cheap comparing to the west). Hope I helped

Paprika hiccup, you seem to know alot about this treatment. Would you recommend it to someone with very sensitive skin, prone to redness? Or is it only for those with more balanced skin?

Has anyone of you tried chemical peels? On your body in particular? To improve your skin tone. Could you tell me the after effects? Does it really work on discolorations? How long is the healing time and is it really effective? Your answers would be very much appreciated.. J^_^

Merged with existing chemical peel thread. Please use search function prior to posting.

I browsed the "How do you make your skin smooth and flawless?" thread.

Is it really as bad as the episode of 'Sex and the City' where Samantha does it for Carrie's book party?

My mom once went to a women who did micro dermabrasion, and she told my mother to come back 2 more times within the next week or two weeks and the skin would be new. I have lots of scars so I want to fade them (or totally get rid of them), and I wonder if a chemical peel is the way to go.

:flower:

Getting rid of acne scars, scars in general, that's something more suitable for microdermabrasion I believe. Because depending on how 'deep' your scars are, unless you have like the strongest peel available (which I think is a Jessner's? Not sure. ) I'm an aesthetician myself but I have only applied glycolic peels to people and myself, and used lactic acid, nothing strong like a TCA or something with phenol. An instructor of mine once said she had her face prepped for a peel with acetone.:shock:

Anyway I would look more into microdermabrasion.

Has anyone ever done a tca peel at home? I'm thinking of getting a 10% or 20% one...not too high a concentration because I'd be nervous to do it on my own. I know 10% tca is considered a light peel, so would that be enough to make a difference? Or would it be about the same as a glycolic peel? I have used a 35% glycolic peel and didn't notice a difference. I have brown spots on my cheeks that I want to get rid of.

I do 65% Lactic and 50% Glycolic peels at home (one of each once a week). I'm doing it to prep my skin for a more intense peel later this year.

Even though they sound scary, the peels I do are pretty mild; my skin doesn't shed like it would with deeper peels. I'm hoping to do a TCA peel later, but it will really depend on what my skin looks like at that time and what is recommended to me. I really want to take the next step and do something more invasive, but I may end up just getting a light peel, like a salycilic acid.

It annoys me when people go into chemical peels not knowing what to expect and then freak out when their skin turns red and starts peeling; then they give a bad review or warn people against it. That's the POINT of peels! I wish they'd do their research first.

I've never had one professionally done, but once I overcame my fear of ending up like Samantha in SATC after she has her peel, I decided to try out the 5 day samples of MD Skincare Daily Face Peel that I received from Mecca. And I am IN LOVE. These little babies are incredible. I can't wait to order some of my own

I have oily acne prone skin and someone told me you have to be in your 30's before these peels actually make a difference to your skin. Is this actually true? I'm 25 and I'd love to try out a Glycolic peel because I've heard nothing but good things about it.

^^That's not true. I am in my 20's also and although I have never had a professional peel done, I have used 50% glycolic acid on my face (Natura Bisse GlycoPeel 50%) and been fine. I say go for it, just do your research.

Are there any affordable 50% glycolic peels? LetThemEatCake, the one you mentioned is a bit pricey.

Well I dont know of any other brand that has glycolic acid as the second ingredient like Natura Bisse does. And they are very, extremely gentle. So I also dont know who uses at least 50%. You dont HAVE to use that much, there is also a 25% GlycoPeel.

I bet the MD Skincare that Belowen is using or about to get shipped to her is a much more reasonable price. I understand about prices, but I figured, "You go to a spa and pay at least $125-exceeding and why not get the product from counter which I dont know off the top of my head how many uses are in it, but I would say at least ten. For me though I have an OCD habit of reapplying over where it already is, so I waste product....:(

Anyhow, where you located a la Balenciaga?

It seems everyone is coming out with a peel in skincare lines, Clarins has one now and Lancome, microdermabrasion is sooo 5 years ago. (Even though I recommend it, but that's for acne scars, peels I recommend for quicker results)

I found a microdermabrasion home kit by Neutrogena as well. I haven't tried it though

Has anyone tried it on any place other than their face? Like the arms, legs..

I really want a 50% GlycoPeel. I've looking every where for one. I live in Los Angeles.
I am familiar with where in L.A. to get Natura Bisse. Go to Barneys or Neiman's, both a block or two from each other on Wilshire. I'd go to Barneys before Neiman's and just see if you can get samples of this peel. You'll love Natura Bisse. I would suggest buying at least one thing so it doesnt look like you're just in for a sample, otherwise they'll probably say no.
