Christian Siriano went big for his first pre-fall collection *(literally and metaphorically). The vast lineup was inspired by the wardrobe of Greta Garbo in the 1931 film “Mata Hari,” in which she stars as the exotic-dancer-cum-spy for Germany during World War I. “We took the lavishness [of Garbo’s costumes] and tried to make it a little more wearable,” Siriano said, noting the collection’s French and Art Deco undertones.
Dresses in silk fringe, metallic brocade and velvet burn-out fabrics underscored the Thirties-era glamour. While some of the eveningwear options seemed overwrought, Siriano’s sportswear separates had a more youthful appeal — such as an amethyst-embellished cropped top paired with wide-legged silk crepe trousers.
