Clements Ribeiro: On a Roll
September 20, 2004 - London
The husband and wife team of Inacio Ribeiro, a Brazilian, and British born Suzanne Clements have consistently produced shows that stand as highlights at London Fashion Week. Their collections are always eclectic, ethnic and eccentric combining a mélange of hot, tropical colors, bohemian silhouettes, eastern prints and on-trend fashion looks that convey the simplicity of American sportswear with aristocratic British flair.
Their collection shown Monday night was all this with added zing. In fact, it would be fair to say Clements Ribeiro have raised their game considerably. They are thinking big. Yes, there were fantastic Biba-esque floaty day dresses, pretty smock tops and cute pegged trousers decorated with exotic multi-colored overblown folkloric prints and brocades taken from Indian art, 19th Century botany books or old-English wallpaper prints. Yes, their mix of colors — a pimento red draped pencil skirt with sunshine yellow tank and vivid purple long, loose cashmere cardigan — were spot on.
As always their modestly sexy dresses, loose cut wide-leg trousers, beautifully cut day coats, signature cashmere cardigans and slim, collarless brocaded jackets with no superfluous padding could instantly be imagined taking on a busy social life outside the runway. What made this collection special is that this time they were presenting the whole package with a brand new shoe and handbag deal that means instead of borrowing from others, this collection was, for the first time, 100% Clements Ribeiro from top-to-toe.
The shoes and sandals, platform and wedge affairs with styling inspired by Roman gladiator sandals and sparkle borrowed from Indian ceremony sandals were hip and girlie. They are sure to be hits next season. Their bag collection also hit just the right note. Their roomy Yoga bag, photographers hold-all, and cute butterfly clasp tote handbags in spicy, earthy shades of clay, saffron and hot pink print fitted in with their souped up vision perfectly. This was Clements Ribeiro on top form, and they knew it.
"We're definitely on a roll," said an exuberant Inacio Ribeiro post-show. "We have never felt so positive. It took a while to ink our deal with the accessories manufacturers, but now we¹ve done it, we couldn¹t be happier." This could be the beginning of a whole new phase for Britain¹s favorite husband and wife team.
