I'll be honest, hadn't heard of him before seeing him portray Michael Langdon on AHS: Apocalypse & yes, I'm obsessed now.

Cody Fern (born July 7, 1988) is an Australian actor. He has portrayed murder victim David Madson in the FX series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story and the Antichrist, Michael Langdon in American Horror Story: Apocalypse. He will play Duncan Shepherd in the upcoming season of the Netflix drama House of Cards (2019).

Fern was born in Southern Cross, in rural Western Australia. He attended boarding school at Merredin Senior High School, and graduated from Curtin University of Technology with an Honours Degree in Commerce in 2009.

In 2011, Fern played Romeo in Shakespeare WA's production of Romeo and Juliet, Lindsay in the Black Swan Theatre Company's Jandamarra, and the Earl of Southampton in the world premiere production of The Enchanters at the State Theatre of Western Australia. He has appeared in a number of short films, including the Western Australian Screen Award-winning picture Still Take You Home (2010) and The Last Time I Saw Richard (2014).

Fern has trained with well known acting coaches, including: Ellen Burstyn, Larry Moss, and Susan Batson. Fern played the lead role of Albert in the National Theatre of Great Britain's production War Horse, which received critical acclaim.

In 2014, Fern was the winner of the Heath Ledger Scholarship.

He appeared as Jim Mason in The Tribes of Palos Verdes and wrote, directed and starred in the short film Pisces opposite Keir Gilchrist in 2017.

In 2018, Fern made his television debut in the acclaimed FX true crime anthology series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story as David Madson. He was later announced to star in the series regular role of Duncan Shepherd on the final season of House of Cards. Fern portrays the Antichrist Michael Langdon in the eighth season of FX horror anthology series American Horror Story, titled Apocalypse.

Gianni Versace gets title billing in the current season of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series American Crime Story, but the story belongs to his murderer, Andrew Cunanan. A serial killer who targeted gay men, Cunanan was already being pursued by the FBI in connection to four murders before he shot Versace in the head outside his beachfront villa in South Beach in July 1997, and while the season opens with the famed designer’s death, it quickly spins back in time to track Cunanan’s bloody path to Miami. In last week’s episode, Cunanan, played by Darren Criss, killed Lee Miglin, a closeted married man who was a longtime client of Cunanan’s escort services, and tonight introduces David Madson, Cunanan’s ex-boyfriend and second victim, who is portrayed by the Australian newcomer Cody Fern in his television début. “If you know Ryan’s work, you know that Ryan is not going to just give you the assassination of Gianni Versace,” Fern says. “That doesn’t interest him so much as the context around it and how it got to this point. He finds ways into stories that nobody else does. I don’t know where it comes from, but he understands human nature in a way that most people don’t.”

Coming off the success of The People v. O.J. Simpson, the first season of American Crime Story, which aired in 2016 and took home a batch of Emmys and Golden Globes for its incisive investigation of racism, sexism, and the media circus of the Nineties, The Assassination of Gianni Versace dives into the era’s homophobia and what Fern describes as “how men treat men and especially how gay men treat gay men.” One of the through lines of the season is the police’s repeated bungling of the case—in the very first episode, a car trunk is shown stuffed full of Wanted flyers with Cunanan’s face that no one took the initiative to distribute—and the prevailing attitude that, until Versace’s death and the media attention that followed, dismissed Cunanan’s killing spree as a “gay” problem. “People might not say it as crassly as that, but essentially what it came down to was like, ‘Let’s just let them have at it and we’ll go about our normal, straight police cases,’” Fern explains. “The series really explores gay shame and what it meant to be a gay man in the Nineties coming out of the AIDS crisis. My character is dealing with an intense amount of gay shame and it’s a really subtle, but sad, look into his psyche.”

For his stunning breakout role on “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” Cody Fern went to dark places playing a cautious out gay man entangled with spree killer Andrew Cunanan.

Australian-born Fern plays David Madsen, a sweet and eligible architect who can’t seem to shake his former lover Cunanan — who is a compulsive liar and increasingly desperate following a split with a generous older boyfriend.

After witnessing the gruesome murder of their mutual friend Jeff Trail at Cunanan’s hands, Madsen is taken hostage and eventually meets the same end. The Ryan Murphy FX series serves as a sort of redemption for Madsen, who was initially thought to be Cunanan’s accomplice.
