Costume Institute Gala 2008 "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy"

I think Christina Ricci was the highlight. I'm surprised that so many here didn't like her dress but say that everyone else is boring. You can't have it both ways. I thought it made us all look and it was appropriate for the theme. She looks like a superhero going out to a ball.
Lake Bell's dress worked with the theme without being over the top.
I liked Katie Holmes from the neck down.
I liked Mary Kate from the neck down. The gold works for me.
And I liked Zac Posen's Clark Kent themed look.
I also like Dr. Lisa Airan and Sarah Brown (Vogue). I think their dresses have a superpower otherworldy vibe.
I don't give V. Beckham any points for looking evil because she always looks like that.
Other than that, I don't think anyone else really tried at all.

Where can one find pictures of the socialites/non-celeb attendees? I'm so vastly disappointed with the celeb garb (with the exception of Gisele - absolutely divine - and Christina Ricci - wonderful) that I'm hoping there is more inspiration to find in the less-famous.

^that's even faster than the Victoria's Secret thread :ninja:
and I've visited this thread a few hours ago when it was closed at the first page

anyway I think Coco and Anja looked quite cool

So most of the models looked great. =]
Sasha, Jourdan, Raquel, and Rosie, I am looking at you!
Eugenia Silva looked AMAZING.

No photos of Iekeliene? I thought she was supposed to be wearing Oscar. Caroline's dress is fantastic, but did not like that makeup at all. Also, glad somebody wore that Rodarte dress!

Yes, I agree. Most of the models looked stunning, especially Gisele and Natasha Poly!

My favourites from what I've seen so far are:
Christina Ricci
Kate Bosworth
Kate Moss
Katie Holmes
Blake Lively

Met Gala: The Agony and the Ecstasy of the Red Carpet

This morning feels like the day after prom, except we didn't just lose our virginity and we're not dying of hangover (kidding — or are we?). Last night at the Costume Institute gala, the Soirée for the World's Most Fabulous People in the World's Most Fabulous Dresses (or, this year, perhaps the Bat-Cave Ball), we worked the red carpet like a street corner on Saturday night. That is to say, we didn't actually attend. But we already know what happened inside anyway: Victoria Beckham smiled on the down low, everyone was jealous of Katie Holmes's bob and Gisele's body, and guests politely picked at their food. And it's not like the red carpet wasn't without its humor: Just take Lady Wintour's alien-walk entrance, for starters.
Ever the dutiful hostess, Anna was the first to arrive at about a quarter till seven with her daughter, Bee Schaffer. Like mother like daughter, the pair arrived wearing complicated (and thus impractical, though if there ever were a night…) gowns. Wintour wore a floor-length silver Chanel Haute Couture number with what looked like puffy antlers attached to the hips. Or maybe they were Princess Leia buns. There was a distinct Star Wars vibe going. She slowly climbed up the empty red-carpeted stairs, gripping the pillowy attachments at her sides as if to help swivel her hips, an act she methodically performed her entire walk up the stairs.
On the other side of the disorientingly wide red carpet, Bee lumbered up the stairs in perhaps the most voluminous gown of the night, a purple strapless number with leafy appliqués spilling from the bodice. More than one security guard fanned Bee's train out behind her and helped her up the stairs, lest conniving tulle and/or gravity suck her back down. She trudged along, leaving Mom to fend for herself with a few select camera crews. One such reporter even had the audacity to hold a Batman mask up to Wintour's face. Wintour promptly retreated to the other side of the carpet.
Predictably (and unfairly), the most stunning attendees of the evening were the supermodels. Gisele Bündchen looked perfect in a backless neutral Versace gown with side cutouts. In person, she obnoxiously looks as though she's never had so much as a chocolate chip in her life. Chanel Iman also looked stunning in a swirly chartreuse belted Phillip Lim gown. Since she's home-schooled, this was her version of prom. Guess she missed that whole awkward high-school phase, huh?

Video: Red-Carpet Superheroes at the Met Gala

Obviously, we all love to ogle and gawk at pictures of the celebs at last night's big affair, but that doesn't quite capture the special night in all its shrieking grandeur. Thus Jada Yuan hit the red carpet, camera in tow, so that we might share with you the sparkly mêlée: See Anna shimmer; watch the Kaiser saunter! Plus Coco Rocha, Anja Rubik, Jessica Stam, Emily Mortimer, Fergie, and Zac Posen all came by to chat, as did Lynda freaking Carter. Of course Anna thought to invite the real Wonder Woman — what, you think this is the first time she's thrown a party or something?

Oooh, I hadn't seen Bee's dress.. It's beyond stunning!:wub: I might like it even more than Christina's.

Naomi Watts looks like a superhero's girl. I love it! :woot:

Thandie, what were you thinking?

as much as a grand majority didn't seem to enjoy the dress and heels worn by katie holmes, i really think that she managed to fit the theme perfectly, and really... isn't that the point? she looks like super woman, wonder woman, some super heroine and managed to look glamourous as well. of course, the posh-like tan looks horrible, but that's beside the point!

*took me this long to get through all the piccies here and elsewhere*

The Costume Institute Gala is my very favourite event of the year.

But like every year, I always wonder why people don't acknowledge the theme in some manner. I'm not saying literally wear the theme - but at least show us that you read the invitation and knew there was one! Unlike say, last year's Poiret exhibition (most do not own vintage Poiret) there was a lot of room here to be a little amusing.

I'm disappointed that most people just looked like they were going to an opera gala (or in some horrible cases, their HS Prom). I did see some subtle nods to the theme - Jessica Seinfeld's lucite shoes or Max Azria's Superman T-shirt with his tux, big superhero bracelets or Balenciaga boots with a gown seemed to do it.

Anna - I don't really like the dress, but I appreciate that she wore it
Julia Roberts - She looks pretty, but as host, I expect more
Amanda Harlech - Is Amy Winehouse a superhero? That was confusing!
Kate Moss - Wow, she looks gorgeous!
Daphne Guinness, Andre Benjamin, Dita Von Teese - All looked nice, but I would have expected these people to really embrace the theme
Katie Holmes - Truly frightening
Sarah Silverman - I think she tried
Lynda Carter - Wonder Woman in the house!

Oh some more models....

Caroline Trentini has a difficult task with make-up and it didn't work out at all. Dress looks fantastic, can't get over the legs any more than Vogue seems to be able to.

Sasha - she did look a bit superhuman, but the bright colors could have used some other make-up.

Rosie & Poly looked awful....so boring, and in Rosie's case like she's been impaled by an invisible rod.

Jordan - a little boring...

As far as the theme goes - most of the people who tried looked very silly, of course. Naomi Watts and Katie Holmes come to mind - just hard to look at.
