Next Questions — Danielle Lashley

N E X T Q U E S T I O N S — “People told me to be a model when I was younger, but I didn’t really take it seriously. I’m really enjoying it actually. I was a waitress beforehand, but now I love it. Everything happens for a reason,” says @danilashley. Having begun her modeling life earlier this year as a @louisvuitton runway exclusive, Danielle could not be better positioned on the eve of her first full season starting in New York. Meet The Brit Model Whose First Job Was The Louis Vuitton Show
by Naomi Pike
Friday 10 March 2017

When it comes to first modelling jobs, few come better than walking exclusively in the Louis Vuitton show during Paris Fashion Week. British model Danielle Lashley did just that. Scouted at a Justin Bieber concert, the 21-year-old's breakthrough into the industry reads like a fashion fairytale.

“I am very lucky that we have the most incredible scout, Jodie, whose eye I trust implicitly so when she told me she had found someone special I was pretty excited", says Next London’s head of new faces Ross Young of the breakout model.. When Danielle came in I saw straight away that Jodie was right."

It is well documented that modelling as a career can have a very short lifespan, so for Danielle to make her debut at 21 is quite a unique move. “Her age alone gives her the edge in an industry that is (quite rightfully) often criticised for using girls who are too young,” Ross told Miss Vogue. “Danielle has the confidence and maturity to take on the fashion business in her stride.”

So, when it came to deciding to place her for Louis Vuitton how did Ross and his team know that this British new face and the heritage French house felt like a perfect match? “Louis Vuitton has a fantastic heritage of casting across diverse ethnicities, they love a strong woman. We were delighted Ashley Brokaw (the casting director) saw what we did when we proposed Danielle directly for the exclusive.”

“We agents often feel our hands are tied with the kind of girl we are being expected to find and develop especially when it comes to catwalk. Casting directors and houses are slowly but surely opening up their requirements and we are hoping this inclusivity continues.”

Now, in her first interview - continuing her week of debuts - meet Britain's newest fashion face to watch, Danielle Lashley.

You were scouted at a Justin Bieber concert - what was it like when the NEXT scout approached you?

I guess initially I was surprised. I was rushing home with some friends. My hair was up and I wasn’t wearing make-up when Jodie stopped me. I later discovered that she worked for Next Models. She spoke to me about the modelling industry – it sounded so exciting that I couldn’t resist going to see the team in London who signed me the day that I met them!

Was modelling something you’d ever have considered before?

Growing up people often said that I should be a model because I’m tall but I didn’t ever take that too seriously. It’s not a career I thought I would be in but having been there and seen it, it’s definitely something I could get used to! Before being scouted I worked as a waitress back home in Bournemouth.

Your first job was Louis Vuitton - quite a feat. What did it feel like when you heard the news?

I can’t even put it into words! I was so excited when I found out. I’d been to see the LV team over in Paris and had a good feeling deep down. I was at home with my sister when I got the call – I’m not sure if she was more excited or me! It was great to tell my family and friends too.

Can you talk us through how it feels to step onto the Louis Vuitton catwalk?

It felt absolutely amazing. The location was insane, the music was cool and it was such a privilege to walk in the show. It went so quickly and it felt great to be a part of that moment. I still can't believe that that was my very first job. Walking in the finale with all the other models made it real, that I had actually just walked the autumn/winter 2017 collection for Louis Vuitton - the final show of the season.

Did any of the girls who had been there before give you advice backstage?

Everyone was great backstage. There were other girls doing the show for the first time too, so it definitely took the pressure off and made the whole experience less intimidating! Everyone told me to relax, not to overthink my walk and most importantly to have a good time. It really helped, I had the best time!

Did you get to meet Nicolas Ghesquière?

By walking Louis Vuitton exclusively, I worked closely with him and the design team fitting the looks. He is such a down-to-earth person and really makes you feel relaxed. Ahead of the show, he was backstage boosting our confidence too.

What is something you’ve discovered about the fashion industry that people might not expect?

I didn’t expect everyone to be so nice. Before working with Louis Vuitton, I thought the industry would be serious and intimidating but every member of the team were welcoming – from the designers to the casting team and all of the other models. They made me feel at home which was really great. Next Models have also been so supportive and with me every step of the way which I’ll never forget.

Whose modelling career would you like to emulate?

Models like Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell as they have had true success and continue to work in the industry. Their work ethic is amazing and goes to prove that hard work really pays off. I want to work hard to have a long and successful career, see the world and grow more as a person.

What were your future plans before this all kicked off?

I was saving to go travelling and kind of unsure what career path I wanted to venture down. The opportunities that modelling can bring are endless – fingers crossed I’ll get to travel more with modelling, which I can’t wait for.

If you weren’t modelling, what would you be doing?

I would probably still be working as a waitress, saving up my tips to travel the world! I was going with the flow and seeing where life would take me. I now hope this will be a whole new world to experience. I would love to work with Vogue all over the world and with Prada and Valentino.”
