Meet Calvin Klein's Newest Runway Star, Dauphine McKee

Famous faces at Calvin Klein's Fall 2013 show were abundant: Jessica Chastain and Olivia Wilde watched from front row perches, while supermodels Karlie Kloss and Carolyn Murphy walked the runway. According to Francisco Costa's show notes, the collection was inspired by “Parallel aesthetics – masculine and feminine, classic and new, soft and hard – which converge to create a modern uniform." But equally notable was 17-year-old Dauphine McKee, who was walking in her very first New York Fashion Week. So far, she's been part of an astonishing 19 shows - and she's jetting off to London next. We chatted with the soon-to-be fashion star about her whirlwind debut week.


ELLE: What did you think of the Calvin Klein collection?

Dauphine McKee: It was beautiful and amazing. I loved my look; it was one of my favorite things [in the show]! It was this little bra [bandeau] top, and it was so cute. It was navy blue, and I wore it with this high-waisted skirt. It was gorgeous.


ELLE: Which other shows have you walked in this week?

DM: Today, I did Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. This is my 19th show and honestly, I can’t remember them all! I know I did Herve Leger at the beginning of the week, and Reem Acra, Y-3, J. Crew, Proenza…


ELLE: Which was your favorite?

DM: Honestly, it was Calvin Klein, because it’s always been my dream to do Calvin Klein. They close New York Fashion Week, and their show is so prestigious for a model. To do it in my first season is incredible.


ELLE: Where did you grow up? How were you discovered?

DM: I grew up in Toronto. I was literally just walking down the street, and an agent there approached me and said, ‘Have you ever thought of modeling?’ I was tall and skinny, but at the time I was really into musical theater. I thought about it, and figured modeling would tie in well with theater, because of photo shoots and runway. From there, it just took off. I’ve been modeling for about a year now.


ELLE: Have you gotten an apartment in New York yet?

DM: Not yet. I’m staying in a hotel with my mom. I’m so glad she came with me.


ELLE: How do you maintain your energy running around during Fashion Week?

DM: Usually I try to eat healthy, but during Fashion Week, it’s so crazy that you just eat whatever is backstage. You can’t cut out carbs when you’re trying to race around from show to show. The call time this morning for Ralph Lauren was 6 a.m., then I had Calvin Klein, then I fly to England tonight. You can’t limit your eating when you’re on the go.


ELLE: Then it’s a myth that models don’t eat?

DM: From what I’ve seen, they definitely eat!


ELLE: What emotions do you feel when you’re walking the runway?

DM: It’s very exhilarating. I always try to think of the top models, like Karlie Kloss. It was such a dream come true to walk with her in this show! I think if you feel really confident and good about yourself, then you’ll exude that, and that will come across to the audience.
