yeah i had heard about their monopoly on diamonds over the years. and how they use the money to fund bloody wars with the local nationals to get a better grip on the diamond mines. i told myself if i ever got married that i would demand that the ring either be vintage or be a man-made diamond. or not a diamond at all.
i'm really mad when i watch E! and they talk about the movie "blood diamond" and then go "now let's take a look at some really awesome diamonds!!!" not the most socially conscious channel, i guess. haha.
I feel the same way, DeBeers is a long-corrupt cartel and they control most of the diamonds sold.
The best replacement for a diamond is Moissanite. My wedding ring was stolen last year and we replaced it with a Moissanite ring...after learning more about diamond procurement, I wasn't keen on getting another diamond!
But Moissanite is so exciting! It was discovered about 100 years ago by a researcher named Dr. Henri Moissan (hence the name) in Arizona. It came from the insides of a falling star that had made impact with the earth. The carbon based fragments went under research for many years until they could replicate the way it was naturally formed. This stuff rocks! It's harder than sapphire and almost as hard as a diamond (9.25 hardness compared to a 10) and it has more luster, more fire and isn't 'fakey' feeling because it's a genuine stone. Not too mention alot cheaper...look it up! There is only one company called Charles and Colvard who is licensed to make Moissanite stones, so the quality control is excellent and I LOVE my ring
