Defending your fashion interest

I very often hear friends/relatives say how stupid it is of me to spend so much money on clothes, especially on items I know I might only wear a few times (or sometimes I end up never wearing them at all).

I defend myself by saying that it's my biggest interest in life and that I see myself as a collector, just like you can collect art and spend huge amounts of money on paintings, or like some people I know who work in the film industry collect DVDs, cameras and other expensive stuff.

I think the root to this "problem" is that fashion always has been something that mostly women are interested in, and we all know how society likes to say women are irrational and emotional. This is why ( I think) fashion is not seen as a "serious" interest but as silly. Theres are some trying to say fashion is art, in an attempt to upgrade the status of fashion, but I think this is wrong and in some way proving the "other side" right. I think art is seen upon as more serious because most painters are men, therefore it's cultural.
Why not acknowldge that fashion and art are two separate things and that they are both equally serious?

My sister even said once: "I think you are trying to fill up for some kind of emptiness in your life, that's why you care so much and have to spend money on these sorts of things, it's like an addiction, just like you can be addicted to drugs"
I didn't even know what to reply to that, my sister saying I need some kind of therapy because of my fashion interest (obviously something she'd heard from Oprah or Dr Phil and then come to her own conclusion...)

Oh and by the way, no I'm not like an addict and I'm not trying to make up faor anything.

People here don't seem to understand some things. For example, most people I know associate the word 'stylish' with 'over-the-top galmorous' - or in other words, a lot of glitter, colour and very Dior or Cavalli. That is absolutely not something I like. I tend to enjoy wearing black, grey, white and navy.. I don't really wear bright colours or excessive jewelry, I like simplicity with a rock chic charm.. however this is usually misunderstood and I get comments on how boring, unexciting, bland I dress. I don't particularly care but it does upset me sometimes. I can't afford to dress how I exactly wish (which would be mostly Ann Demeulemeester and Undercover) but I appreciate beautiful designs and try to steer away from tackyness. And just because I don't carry a Louis Vuitton logo bag and don't wear head-to-toe Dolce&Gabanna people never really seem to appreciate the fact that I am a huge fashion enthusiast. Le sigh..

I'm very into art, and I see fashion as an art form, as in designers/collections. Defending my fashion interest is that I'm a creative and artistic person, and see clothes and the way that I am styled as an extension of the creativity running through me! Also, going to public high school in the suburbs (although I might be switching to private academy next year!) everyone wears jeans, tight little shirts, and consider abercrombie as high fashion. I don't necessarily care about making a statement or standing out, just looking well put together, "cool" if you will B) and just not like another suburban high school clone.

I have the best excuse: I'm going to a fashion school! So spending time and money on fashion and fashionmagazines is accepted.

I use to get lots comments from my friends about spending all my money on fashion and mostly jeans, but they understand a little more, everyone has a hobbie, i would never spent $50 on a night of drinking or on a video game so spending $150 on jeans that i will wear for 5 years makes sence to me.
I also dont buy all desinger i save alot of money wearing vintage.so it evens out.
In the past year or so it seems the amount of people in to fashion has gotton greater, so less people are making a big deal about it.
