Call it a “muse-off”: Today, high-profile Chanel muse Caroline de Maigret turned her iPhone lens on another—the high-flying, low-profile model Amanda Sanchez—as she circled the tricked-out dice joint of a runway at Chanel’s couture show. Sanchez has been walking for the storied house since 2001, a legendary number of years for any career in the modeling industry, and plenty more than fan favorites like Cara Delevingne and Kendall Jenner (combined!). But unlike her high-profile contemporaries, Sanchez has never appeared in a campaign or secured a coveted opening or closing spot on the runway.

Sanchez’s relatively low-key position in the modeling industry is no surprise: The Brazil native, now in her mid-thirties, is Chanel’s fit model. It’s a position that’s typically a no-frills type of job—involving working in-house and on-call for the designer to base collections off of their proportions. Unlike Sanchez, a regular on the Chanel runway, fit models typically do not appear in shows. But Sanchez is more than a behind-the-scenes staple. Her Instagram feed, @amandasanchez, is mostly filled with photos of the models posing on the spiral staircases at Chanel’s headquarters at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris, often hashtagged with phrases like “#secondhome” or “#waitingfortheboss.”

Despite her relative anonymity, Sanchez possesses an off-kilter, transfixing beauty that is more striking than cookie-cutter, and one that totally fits in within the codas of the house—think previous campaign stars like de Maigret, Saskia de Brauw, and Freja Beha Erichsen—all dark, memorable features, slivered cheekbones, an angular, elegant nose, and an inky mane of hair. And coupled with a devil-may-care cool and under-the-radar profile? Maybe we’ve cracked the secret to staying on the most hotly anticipated runway of the season for nearly two decades.
