Dior Men F/W 2023.24 Paris

just another Dior by Kim Jones. the clothes were pretty and minimal and for once I am not missing another random collaboration that overtakes the collection. The reading that was happening in the background felt a bit much at times and overtook the show, though the models were all walking like zombies.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed the collection a lot. From the set to the Max Ritcher soundtracks they complement the clothes well.

The clothes were tastefully done. The whole collection looks quite luxe (minus the juvenile yellow). The styling is perfect.
It's a good approach to strip down the prints and heavy embroideries and make him focus on the cut and silhouettes of the clothes.
It's nothing groundbreaking but it's exactly clothes for a brand like Dior deserves.
This collection just proved to me that Kim is a capable designer (for men) and he suddenly can come up with something decent without relying on that tiresome Collab schtick, if he is willing to put in the work.

Ironically this collection provoke more emotion in me than anything MGC created in the last 3 years.

Never been a big fan of Kim but it's a great collection.

No wonder! I got annoyed by the talking, so I muted the YT feed and put on some music that seemed to have the right instrumentation and vibe -- which was "Landscape With Figure (1922)," "Last Days," and "Sarajevo" by Max Richter ...

It's better than it has been lately but it's still a little too tricky for me.

I was almost prepared to like this collection until I saw some backstage shots and got some different views and realized that it's just as wack as ever.

Beautiful presentation, some beautiful pieces here and there but a lot of shows to look at and not to live in…
The set, the music and the drama around the collection was fitted for something more classic, timeless and desirable. Only the sweater on look 11 and the coat on look 12 are desirable…

I just don’t get Kim Jones. I don’t get him man for Dior. I don’t think he gets what he does at Fendi…There’s something very empty, manufactured and corporate about his approach to fashion. And maybe that’s the reason of his success…There’s everything in his collections and yet it tells nothing about his work, his taste. It’s all very predictable and cliché.

And it’s very interesting to see that his work at Vuitton had more substance and it’s very interesting because Vuitton menswear was niche compared to Dior Homme.

it’s solid I think but at the same time it still lacks something. it’s probably just too polished and bright (colours wise) for my personal taste.

feels like each look is never just one thing

He loves his obnoxious little bits of head wear doesn't he...

Can he just make a look that is pared back and not covered in additional design details and accessories. All of this is a parade of soulless merchandise that's just there. Kim doesn't seem like the type that really does anything with themselves and it shows in the clothes. No personality whatsoever.

The simplest pieces are the nicest. Be it the cardigan-like jacket that is just a small but sensible twist, or the jackets, coats.

The zippers of the jackets by the side doesn’t make the jacket any nicer, just “different”, the culottes/ skirts isn’t going to become a trend. Some of the details are too annoyingly gimmicky and busy.

That said, it is a slightly better collection from KJ in a while, at least there isn’t too many lazy logo clad garments everywhere.

I’m thankful he took a rest from all the gimmickry that I’ve come to associate with his work for Dior, the repurposing of some mid-century silhouettes and materials (particularly in the outerwear) is nicely executed. The parka in champagne pink is quite nice too.

Not everything is good: the weirdly styled knits, the baggy golf-pants and kilts, both of which are frankly uninspired and the ugly hats that look like they belong at Botter. Still I’m happy that he learned his lesson after the Travis Scott fiasco and let go of the Disneyland type sets and prints, so distracting.
