Discussion: Who Should Be The Creative Director of Chanel?

Hermès already created a luxury Chinese house around ten years ago, Shang Xia.
The store was beautiful (not far from the Hermès Lutetia in Paris) and the products exquisite, created with traditional Chinese techniques and materials, like bamboo, silk...

I thought at the moment it was quite a visionary project, but somehow Chinese clientele seemed more receptive to old European heritage houses.
I haven't heard much about Shang Xia since then.
In December 2020,

Ferrari’s Owner Exor Takes Majority Stake in Hermès’ Shang Xia

Exor invested around €80 million in Shang Xia, and in 2021, Exor became the majority owner.
In the same year, Yang Li was appointed its fashion creative director. Shang Xia presented its first collection at the 2021 Paris Fashion Week.

its so bad now the brand nothing like it was before EXOR dont know how to do luxury fashion they are so tacky middle off the road

It does seem like quite a big promotion for him on her part. Plus this image - Anna + Marc + Chanel? Not exactly subtle...

omg really not subtle at all hahahha...it is bad and cringe but she has the balls (and nerve) to do it...
On one of the pictures you can see what it looks like a pastel bag similar of a classic Chanel bag, that makes me think is Anna backing Marc on getting this job? but now it's more than obvious...

Why would Chanel want a designer who's on the downswing of their career as Creative Director? Sure, they had Virginie, but ultimately she was just a placeholder. Karl was very successful at Chloe when they hired him at Chanel. Marc is currently 61 and has done what exactly since leaving LV? ( He's 11 years older than Karl's chronological age when he was hired at Chanel (despite his fluctuating fake ages)). Oh yes... "The Tote Bag"? He gets a bob and buys some witch nails and now we're supposed to think he's suitable for Chanel? Right.

Save us, SJP!

And a BTS video to boot. Grace is back! Though it does make me a bit sad to see her somewhat aged 🥲.

I did find it amusing that Steven Meisel was the photographer on Kaia's shoot but they only showed past photos of him. Not even the back of his live head! As others have implied in another thread...was he even there?

He may not have done much since LV, but he probably still has more cumulative wins than Sarah Jessica - plus a lot more experience at working at the top end of luxury than him.

You're right though, he's definitely on the downswing. But maybe the Chanel heads value potential creativity / experience more than marketing and commercialism? Who really knows 🤷‍♂️

Thought that was Sabato for a split second 🤭
Same, had micro heart attack!

Well if he will be able to produce 1649 collections a year for next 30 years then I wish him best of luck. But this choice feels somehow bizarre…like I can imagine Simon PJ there much more than Blazy…

I find this quite a safe choice. He seems easy to manage. I find his BV very nice, but hardly a fashion proposition. He’s going to do really beautifully crafted clothes at Chanel, I hope he hones in his volumes a bit and works on his art direction skills. Let’s see what he does outside kerings framework.
