i am way behind on all the good television series, but i decided i am going to dedicate a month or two to watch some of them, and see which ones i really get attached to.
in any case, i just started to watch this show in the last couple of weeks, and i've blasted through the first few seasons, and have just started season four now.
a few impressions:
- pure eye candy! the frocks and settings are sublime.
- the writing can be very campy and quite hilariously over-the-top.
- this is an unadulterated soap opera. i hadn't realized that.
- what's the deal with pregnancies? why does someone have to die every time a pregnancy happens? does the writer have mommy issues?
- maggie smith, her ladyship, is a hoot, just a pleasure all the time.
- mr. bates makes me suspicious all the time.
- elizabeth mcgovern plays against stereotype as an american. she's so english-seeming, minus the accent.
- why are (most of) the men so bloody conservative?
- the world war one battle scenes were spectacularly shot. A+
- mary has the best eyebrows and edith is hardly as unattractive as everyone makes her out to be - sheesh!
- daisy is such a cutie. i want her to find a true love.
- anna and mrs hughes and carson are cool cucumbers. always getting it right.
that's all. will keep watching. it certainly has a hook that keeps you pulled in, at least so far anyhow.
