The Designer

It was one dress that originally made everyone sit up and recognise Olowu’s talent. It became known as the Duro with its empire waist, billowing sleeve in a vibrant mix of silk prints. That was 2005 and in the same year he won New Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards. Since when he’s been feted by the international great and good, steadily building his company but not, until last season, staging a catwalk show.
He was born in Lagos to a Nigerian lawyer father and an inspirationally chic Jamaican mother. He trained as a lawyer before pursuing his vocation as a designer. Self-taught, he designed womens-wear collections as one-half of a label called Olowu Golding and knitwear for the Italian company Lucilla. He began his own range in October 2004 which was snapped up by Browns and Barneys and other international boutiques.

Collections

He loves an unexpected mix of fabrics, prints, textures and draping techniques inspired by the clothing of the Nigerian women he grew up with, to which he gives an entirely modern twist. His A/W07 collection called Bamako Pompadour was inspired by the history and beauty of Bamako, the ancient capital city of Mali and the extravagant taste of Madame de Pompadour. “For me nothing is nothing is too right or too wrong.” said Olowu “Things that are offbeat can often be the most sensual".
