Great thread as always, Anna Karina. I love Gorey, and even though its a bit twisted I think his "alphabet" book is genius!

what i like about him, among other things, is that even when he's cruel, he's always poetic, too....

Beautiful stuff,Anna K. I quite like the twisted aspects,myself of Gorey.

And Tim Burton sure did get alot of influence from him for his "Melancholy Death" poems.

you always read my mind, anna! after i posted gorey in the '19th century etchings thread,' i meant to start a gorey thread but got sidetracked. thank you for picking up where i left off!

gorey has been my favorite artist for as long as i can remember...indeed, my first ever favorite artist, from when i was about 7 years old. my mom had an old copy of the book of practical cats, and i became obsessed. i send gorey holiday cards every year...they always get a ton of laughs! over the years i collected so many of his books and i started collecting gorey postcards...i think i have about 50 or so in my postcard collection. anyway, he was a genius and his tongue-in-cheek black humor is something i've never ever seen emulated, at least not in such a nonchalant way. (tim burton certainly tries and he's ok at it but he needs to just make films.)

my friends used to tell me i look like a gorey lady sometimes. i think that was when i wore a lot of black my cat has very characteristically gorey eyes though! he's a total fan!

I love Gorey. I recently finished his autobiography, it was quite good, and got me even more in love with his style, and somewhat twisted view.

here's one image from penny candy but i noticed it doesn't make sense to scan it all since the illustrations work best with the text and i have the german version .... i recommend the book highly, it's one of the most poetic children's books i read (story by edward fenton)
