INTERVIEW WITH FASHION MODEL ELISE A. ESSEBOOM
FEBRUARY 18, 2015 BY MODELLIST-ID
Nationality: Dutch
Profession: Model
Agencies: Future Faces Model Management (Amsterdam) , The Hive Management (London), Sight Management Studio (Barcelona) , Oui Management (Paris), New York Models (New York), Monster Management (Milan).
Milestones: Christopher Kane Excl at London fashion week, Vanilia Campaign, Amsterdam Fashion Week (always fun with the other models).
Current location: Oegstgeest (small village in Zuid-Holland (the Netherlands), next to Leiden)
How were you discovered?
I was scouted in the Zara while I was shopping in Amsterdam. One of my current agents (Amber) came up to me and asked me if I was interested to become a model and if I wanted to pass by the agency someday. I was very surprised but very excited. I believe I made an appointment with Future Faces that same week. Then I started to do some shoots and very soon I had my first campaign (Vanilia) and I really have Jasper Abels, the photographer, to thank for that.
What does your career do for you?
My career as a model gives me the opportunity to meet lots of people and experience a lot of things you usually don’t get to do, like go to amazing locations or to be backstage at a fashion show or to be at the after party’s. It has also made me more mature and independent and I feel more confident about myself.
Tell us a bit about your most memorable shoot?
My most memorable shoot was in Mallorca this summer. I was there with a few people from my mother agency (Future Faces) on an amazing trip and we had a shoot with photographer Nicole Langholz on the beach. But what really made this shoot memorable was the collaboration with Nicole, she asked me to show a side of me that I have never showed before on camera or in real life to anyone. It was both frightening and amazing what she saw and asked of me. It was probably one of the hardest shoots I’ve done so far but it makes me even more proud of the results.
How would you define your personal style?
I’d describe my personal style as classy combined with raw/tough stuff. My style is very mixed though, for example: I love authentic Nike Air Max’ or simple Chelsea boots or Clarks. The pants that I wear are almost always, dark grey, black or a very dark blue combined with some oversized or loose shirts. And as accessory, I wear some gold rings, a cute simple necklace and/or my big black hat.
And what are some of the heroes of your wardrobe?
My wardrobe heroes, that’s a tough question, I pretty much base my style on things I see on the streets or social media like Instagram and Pinterest. I’d say my style hero is Rachel Louey, she’s a 22-year-old design student from Melbourne. I once saw her on Instagram and absolutely love her style.
Could you give us your best beauty and exercise tip(s)?
My best beauty tip is sleep. Sleep is really a miracle for your appearance. You can have lots of make-up or crèmes or anything, but if you look tired all of that doesn’t matter. You just don’t shine like you do when you have had some rest. And drink a lot of water, it keeps you hydrated and makes your skin look better.
About exercising my best tip is: find a sport/workout/exercise you like. If you have fun doing it, it works so much easier and you’re way happier after. I’ve got a really good personal trainer (Dennis) who helps me workout and makes me very conscious about my body. During an exercise he checks if my position is right, so I don’t injure myself when he’s not around.
And what is the one beauty product you can’t live without?
Definitely Number four hairspray. I have a big head of hair with curls/waves so for me this hair product is a must have, I can either tame my hair (for castings or something) or give it a more of a wild look for when I’m ‘off-duty’. N.4 smells good and it’s a very strong substance so you don’t need to use a lot.
Could you give us a 1-day food diary? What do you eat on a regular day?
These are the things I eat most of the time:
Breakfast:
– Oatmeal with coconut milk, soya milk or almond milk, yoghurt cereal or healthy banana buckwheat pancakes
Lunch:
– Vegetable salad, a couscous salad, a quinoa salad, a bulgur salad or a faro salad
Dinner:
– Pumpkin soup, white bean salad, couscous salad or whole-wheat pasta
Snacks:
– Fruit, vegetables or raisins
My salads exist mainly of vegetables. Sometimes I add some fish or meat.
What are your favorite hang out spots in the city you live in (current location)?
I live in Oegstgeest, which is a small town next to Leiden, but I’m actually most of the time in Amsterdam (only 30 minutes away from Oegstgeest). When I’m in Oegstgeest, I just go see some friends or have a drink in Leiden, no place in particular. In Amsterdam, I go to Luna’s café a lot, it’s in the center of the main shopping street. I also like Vapiano, I’m just a big fan of Italian food and the restaurant is just nicely decorated and has a nice atmosphere. But most of the time, I’m at the Future Faces office and go buy some Starbucks after.
What is your favorite city and where do you like to hang out there?
My favorite city is London, especially the Shoreditch area. It’s really fancy, retro, fashionable, stylish and I just love it. When I’m there, I hang out a lot at Boxpark, it’s this really cool concept of pop-up stores in boxes and there is a terrace on top of it with a lovely view and some nice music.
Do you have any advice for those who want to start modeling?
It’s not all pretty, glamorous and easy. You’ve got to work hard for it, but it’s definitely worth it! And of course the cliché of being yourself is a good advice in this business. From what I’ve seen, you’re not only judged by your looks but also by your appearance and attitude.
What do you think MODELLIST-ID can do for the model community?
I think MODELLIST-ID is a good way to keep yourself posted about what’s going on, what the best places are to go to. It’s very handy to read the tips and tricks from other models or people in the modeling industry and see how they do things.
Any nice plans for the future?
My plans for the future are mostly travelling, do cool shoots and shows, meet a lot of new people and chase some dreams.
