Elle Brazil September 2022 : Viola Davis by MAR+VIN

The hat is… um….

But still, this is such a striking image, Viola looks fantastic.

Very striking, probably because you can't really see her.

I really see a glamorous muse here. We'll never now why Anna never put her on the front of Vogue. Also she's one of the best actors in Hollywood, equal to Cate Blanchet and Julianne Moore.

The last cover is giving Cindy Lou Who, and I love it

This, in my not so humble opinion, comes easily as the best September cover(s) of the year, second only to Linda Evangelista. Each more striking than the last, Viola Davis looks absolutely spectacular and it is baffling to me that such a massively talented and beautiful actress is so underrated and unrecognised by the fashion industry (who're very quick to eat up lesser talents). I could hold an Annalise Keating level of monologue on the excellence of this woman, and that she photographs like a dream here only fuels my frustration that we don't get to see her in her fashion element more often (or ever?). The last cover with the headpiece is an instant classic, iconicity, to quote a renowned fashion journalist. Loewe's trompe l'oeil dress, which seems to be thee dress of the season, looks excellent on Viola!

This all feels like the potential Harper's Bazaar under Samira Nasr could achieve. She has a tendency to select underrated subjects for her cover, there's a seriousness and maturity to her magazine, and the simplicity in art direction - all elements that are present here, but somehow executed so much better. I could especially see the third, latex cover as a successful Harper's Bazaar cover with that stellar last portrait as a subscriber's edition. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.

She looks quite elegant on the second cover.
Re: not fronting US Vogue, maybe, Viola and others refuse to work with sub-par Anna?

I love the 1st cover but the 2nd one is PERFECT!
the dress, the hand-play with the dress and pose, the setting. unbelievably good.
what a serve! love it.

1st cover is perfect. I would rather see her photographed by a skilled team for a random edition of Elle than having to stomach another ugly cover from Tyler Mitchell and his granny Anna.

When I saw these covers on Twitter, I thought they were for Elle US. But after seeing what the said publication delivered for this month with what quite possibly I&V’s laziest effort, there’s no way they could pull these off. The Elle Brazil team really put big photographers and renowned editors to shame and Viola proves how severely under-appreciated she is by the fashion crowd.

This decade will be remembered as how random editions of ELLE made a better job against major Vogues. Lately Pepsi has better taste than Coke.
