This, in my not so humble opinion, comes easily as the best September cover(s) of the year, second only to Linda Evangelista. Each more striking than the last, Viola Davis looks absolutely spectacular and it is baffling to me that such a massively talented and beautiful actress is so underrated and unrecognised by the fashion industry (who're very quick to eat up lesser talents). I could hold an Annalise Keating level of monologue on the excellence of this woman, and that she photographs like a dream here only fuels my frustration that we don't get to see her in her fashion element more often (or ever?). The last cover with the headpiece is an instant classic, iconicity, to quote a renowned fashion journalist. Loewe's trompe l'oeil dress, which seems to be thee dress of the season, looks excellent on Viola!
This all feels like the potential Harper's Bazaar under Samira Nasr could achieve. She has a tendency to select underrated subjects for her cover, there's a seriousness and maturity to her magazine, and the simplicity in art direction - all elements that are present here, but somehow executed so much better. I could especially see the third, latex cover as a successful Harper's Bazaar cover with that stellar last portrait as a subscriber's edition. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.
