LOSING everything you owned in a house fire would plunge most people into a deep depression.
But to Lost star Evangeline Lilly, it was "liberating and exciting".
Lilly lost most of her possessions at Christmas after fire gutted her Hawaiian house.
"All that I lost were the things inside. I've always believed that things are more of a chain than they are a vehicle," the 26-year-old Canadian said on a promotional visit in Sydney this week.
"To not be tied down to anything was a great feeling.
"I was at work and I was like, `so I've got the clothes on my back, my wallet and my car, and that's everything I have in the world'.
"It was like I was 20 again and the world was my oyster, and I could go anywhere, do anything and be free."
Lilly was less forthcoming about her relationship with co-star Dominic Monaghan.
While the pair jetted into Sydney on Tuesday, they refused to be photographed or interviewed together.
"I don't discuss my private life," Lilly said.
And of the persistent rumours that he recently proposed to her?
"I'm not giving you the scoop; as I said, I won't discuss my private life."
While Lilly was not wearing an engagement ring, it is known the couple will follow next week's New Zealand media obligations with several days holidaying on the South Island.
There, Monaghan plans to also spend time with director Peter Jackson, with whom he worked on the Lord Of The Rings trilogy.
