Fashion Canada February 2012 : Andrej Pejic by Moo King

^Well... what if he prefers to be dressed up in women's fashions rather then men's? It could be his own choice you know. And I know a lot of people are "over" Andrej's gender-bending looks because it's "boring" but honestly I still think it's refreshing. He's the only male model I can think of atm who willingly wears women's clothing. Also, he's just wearing what's more comfortable to him. And yeah, it has been considered big news by some people, but why shouldn't it be? Because quite frankly we need more people like Andrej to show that gender isn't just male or female for some people. It is a social construct and for some people they don't feel like they are one or the other. Maybe they are a mix of both or something completely different. Anyways, I applaud this magazine for putting him on the cover even if it's a boring editorial at least they are recognizing him for his work. I'm sure a lot of other magazines would never put him on the cover (...Us Vogue...).

^^^I'm pretty sure the choice to be dressed as a woman was not his decision.

As for them featuring him as a cover model, they can afford to since FASHION is not a high-profile magazine that's for the Canadian market mostly (if not only). Canada may be a wasteland of creativity, but it is a very liberal country with a clear distinction of State and Church. So, having a male model in traditional full drag on the cover of a fashion mag will not cause any controversy, or raise an eyebrow. So you really can't compare FASHION to US VOGUE.

^I do see you point Phuel and it is true that Canada is much more liberal and Fashion can be more creative with the cover subjects because it's more niche.

Also, I'd like to know why you think being dressed in feminine clothing wasn't his choice? Has he ever said so in an interview? I'll admit I don't know a ton about Andrej but from what I understand he's been quite comfortable with dressing in women's clothing.

^^^No no, I'm not saying that Andrej hates being in drag. I don't know him either, and he seems very comfortable in it. All I'm saying is Andrej's claim to fame is that he looks incredible as a girl-- so that's what FASHION went with. The team dictates the concept of the shoot-- not the model. Knowing how the mag and the contributing photographers simply follows trends instead of having an original idea of their own, and Andrej is famous for drag, that's what they did. Look at the editorial; it's played out and extremely boring: Andrej dressed in the top Canadian designers. Even the poses are tired.

At the last Toronto Fashion Week, Andrej walked... in drag. Surprise, surprise. It's all very predictable with Canadian fashion. Andrej is famous for being in drag, so let's not try something new, or even subversive, let's just go with what everyone else is doing. That's the Canadian fashion motto.

I like the cover and Andrej. However I do agree with you all that I'm "over" magazines dolling him up. For once I'd like to see Andrej styled in something edgy; maybe Tilda Swinton/Annie Lennox inspired looks instead of straight up glam.

Ahhh Okay. Sorry for the misunderstanding. :flower: And yes you do have a point, he is dressed in feminine clothes a lot, so switching it up would probably be more subversive. It would be interesting to see him try a Tilda Swinton sort of look where the lines between feminine and masculine are blurred. I know we all would love too see Andrej try something different but I wonder if those in the industry want him too? Or if they would rather have him stay wearing more dolled up looks? He's gotten a bit pigeon-holed into a certain style but I do wonder if he would get the same amount of work if he was styled in an androgynous way rather then a more glamourous look. :ermm:
