Gemma Ward

SHE was set to make her long-awaited return to Sydney's social scene this week but elusive model Gemma Ward made an 11th-hour withdrawal from her homecoming.
Once a regular on the party circuit, the actress - who last year was an extra on The Great Gatsby - was confirmed to attend the AACTA awards on Wednesday night, as well as the opening of the new Christian Dior boutique in the city last night. However, Confidential understands her new agency, IMG Models, spoke with organisers of both events and cancelled Ward's appearances.
It was reported this month that, after signing with IMG, the doll-like Ward was returning to the runway after more than five years. There are rumours she will join new host Jennifer Hawkins on Australia's Next Top Model.
"It's been a long time but Gemma is on her way back. I don't know what happened this week with the no-shows, but we will be seeing her very soon," a source said.
"She's ready for her close-up, so to speak."
Ward's hiatus has been well documented. Following the death of boyfriend Heath Ledger in 2008, the Perth-born beauty shunned the spotlight while living in New York. Ward then made a triumphant return in 2011 during a three-month stint at Western Australia's State Theatre Complex in their production of The Ugly One, as well as appearing as queen of the mermaids in Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
It was then that Ward opened up about Ledger's death and the effect it had on her, saying they were both "going through hard times" and agreed to be there for each other, without having a serious relationship. Two months later Ledger died

Man....I wonder what's up with Gemma. I've wondered it for awhile, but announcing a comeback then not showing up to two events? :/

I don't think Gemma has any intention of making a comeback, nor has he ever. Her name is simply being bandied about by IMG Australia to make them look like they're not a completely invalid agency, because she was once an A-grade model. Even though it's IMG, they're still in Australia - No one in fashion really cares about the southern hemisphere.

I wouldn't go that far.

I'm sure we will see new work soon, a Vogue Australia cover and probably more work in Australia. There is no reason to believe multiple sources are just posting fake rumors.

But at the same time people are way too optimistic about her chances on an international level. Apart from a very vocal minority nobody is waiting for her, and it will be difficult to get traction again. Not impossible, but....

At the same time it's a bit sad that she is starting again as a model for IMG Australia - it feels like she gave up on her acting career because she only got jobs as an extra in recent years.

Have to disagree with that, why would she plan to show up at events that received a lot of coverage if she wasn't planning to make a comeback, even if she is just planning on modelling here. And I wouldn't say they're completely invalid, they got their hands on the highest earning model in the country, Miranda Kerr and most likely now have Abbey. I think she just got scared.

Who can blame her? She's been flying pretty low on the radar for a few years and now that there is even a whisper of a photoshoot everyone is expecting her to be Gemma at her prime, when she probably doesn't forget the way people were saying she was already done for during that infamous Chanel show where she walked out in that denim bikini. People can be horribly mean, she hasn't thought of modelling in years, and I can only imagine what the pressure to succeed feels like (eg not good at all). If I felt like I even had a hair out of place, I'd probably forgo events as well.

Besides, most of the information has been rumor-based, so who knows what actually is going on.

and I was really excited to see some new pictures of her :( I wonder what has she been doing mean while? I mean I'm sure she had another job or something

may i ask what happened with the denim bikini?

No for me the denim bikini and what she can remember it's off topic..
There is not a reason like that !
I think she just gonna start in Australia with some jobs and see what's going on .

She is perfect today and i'm sure she can come back how she wants but she maybe wants to start slowly or probably don't want back in HF but become "people" or something.
We don't know bc she said nothing it's just rumors .

Let's see

Aww this all looks like she wont be returning after all, I think her agency wants her back but she doesn't want the pressure. I don't think she wants to spend hours everyday at the gym or go on special diets (like most of the world)

Modeling is much harder when your not 16, just ask Naomi Cambell or any of the VS models

To me it sound more like she doesn't feel ready yet and will work more on her body until she feels more confident.

There will be a lot of media attention in Australia after all.

Just have some patience.

Gemma's ranking on the latest Most Viewed Models list is phenomenal. :D I have a feeling she'll be on the top spot when a new material is published.

Have these been posted? Please delete if they have! :flower:

From the Vogue Australia March 2013 Editor's Letter:
This issue marks the start of the Model Series, consisting of five collectable editions featuring international supermodels on our covers (including some Australians, but we will keep you guessing), each shot by a different photographer. I hope you will collect all five and keep them in the beautiful purpose-designed box that will be on sale next month with our April issue.
Pretty interesting initiative! I wonder who they will be? This may mean Gemma?

Hmm...international SUPERMODELS it says...There is a huge possibility it's Gemma since although the word "supermodel" tends to be randomly thrown nowadays, fashion editors still use it with caution.
