Maybe it is an area thing. I am from Adelaide and most people know who she is even guys who aren't into fashion. She is in the paper quite a lot. Not Miranda famous but most people recognise her name. My boyfriend is from Karratha and a real country town person who knows nothing about fashion and even he recognised her, although I guess in WA she would be more famous.

I am from Melbourne, and she is definitely not a household name.

^^^ I've never actually read anything where Gemma mentions Heath Ledger over and over again- there was 2011 and a couple times more recently in interviews, and I'm sure she was asked about him. She is a pretty private person, she wouldn't even talk about him or their relationship for a long time.

But anyway, I'm from the USA but I was never under the impression that she was very famous in Australia. She's iconic in the fashion world, but otherwise she's not a household name. Maybe it's just a regional thing in Australia?

I think everyone's definitions of famous are different and we all need to calm our t*ts.

I think it is very likely she is quite famous in Australia. People tend to be more interested in famous people from their own country There is a reason Kate Moss is on every other UK Vogue cover and only on other Vogue covers once in a while.

it also depends on the ages. are all of you australians the same age?
Guess it´s something like Toni Garrn for Germany. She is in magazines, but not everyone read tabloids. She was on Gntm, but not everyone watches that. She was the girlfriend of Leo, but he had so many. To me Toni Garrn isn't popular in Germany, too.

Australia has a "tall poppy syndrome" thing over here - it's fine if you want to start modelling again but let's see how it goes before we pop the champagne, eh? There's a strange attitude towards the local talent; you only get noticed by regular Oz media (ie general news, not fashion only) if you have something 'hot topic' to say or you've just scored some big overseas deal. Besides, Gemma didn't give a ton of interviews back in the early days, so why start now? Come to think of it, the same could be said for Catherine McNeil.

Elle Macpherson has way more years in the industry (20+) over Gemma so that's really not a fair comparison at all.

She's not that famous in Australia - she's not a household name or model-brand.

If I were to show my parents a photo of Gemma, they wouldn't know who she was really or her name.

I would say she is semi-famous in Australia.

I hope it's the cover. She was the first model i was ever obsessed with. TBH, i expected her comeback to be a little more major. I see on IG she's been flying around, so i hope it's for a good amount of work. Not gonna lie, i'd hoped for at least 5 Vogue covers by now. It's GEMMA WARD! I hope she surprises us this season with some blue chip campaigns.
