an original question, but since no one's replied i'm going to cheat and name five acts i never expected to be able to hear but who through one route one or another eventually did.

anal **** (er, the name alone....)
death cab for cutie (back in the day a reviewer in the village voice put the big hurt on them, and i'm more susceptible to reviews than i realize i should be)
lucinda williams (didn't think i was ready for the country)
nrbq (thought they profited from the same mentality and demographic that bought frank zappa's records)
bjork (well, in bjork's case i DID try until i was ready to bail. then i heard human nature. then vespertine...)

name five of your favorite power pop bands, the more recent the better.
