he Chloe collection for spring/summer '09 isn't for people who need wardrobe basics.
Chloe has a long and storied history, complete with Left Bank allure, socialite and celebrity devotees like Brigitte Bardot and Grace Kelly, and diva designers Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney.
Today the line is for people who like the way the latest creative director, Hannah MacGibbon, toys with staples like shorts, shifts and blazers by playing with their proportions, buttons and waistlines.
Held at one of the sumptuous Miami Beach homes of Market America's Loren Ridinger, the show's looks swing uncomfortably between conventional and odd.
Is the Chloe woman a conservative hostess with the tiniest of brazen streaks?
Is she a wild child at heart, pretending to be grown up?
Ridinger, sporting a vintage, beaded, black Chloe number, said before the show in her expansive garden that she'd already seen some of the outfits and was impressed.
''I love them all!'' she said.
