The opulent surroundings of Spencer House were the optimum setting for Graeme Black's exotic elegance. Under the twinkling lights of several dozens chandeliers and the unflinching gaze of ancestors and warriors in apocryphal paintings, Black’s collection of crystal-embellished tweeds, feathered skirts and jewelled-silks was paraded.
The collection was inspired by a visit to the Gallery of Minerals in The British Museum, Black using the striations and organic markings of quartz, hessonite, heliodor and andradite as the starting point for his prints, textures and colour palette.
The silhouette was precise: Wide-sleeved, short jackets in silk tweeds, cashmere and fur, were allied to short, petal-curved or bell skirts. Cocoon-shape coats opened to reveal feathered and jewelled collars and fitted bustiers, decorated with metallic embroidery.
Cocktail dresses were generally strapless, in tiers or soft pleats of organza in shimmering rust, bronze, black or cobalt tones which echoed the jewel-colours of the minerals which began Black’s creative process.
