In the Spotlight: Guillaume
“My earliest memory of beauty is a story I saw in French Vogue in 1968 with the supermodel Veruschka (Von Lehndorff), shot by Franco Rubartelli (pictured, above). From his muse to his lover, it’s to him she owes her career, in fact,” hairstylist Guillaume tells CR. “From that day on, I wanted to become a studio hairdresser.” After lending his talents to French Vogue and working with industry icons like Guy Bourdin, Guillaume went on to revolutionize the industry, founding Mod’s Hair, “the first agency for studio hairdressers (for fashion).” Here, Guillaume talks to CR about some of his most iconic career moments.
1. “The most memorable job I remember was for the Pop issue of French Vogue, shot by Guy Bourdin in the 70s. It was not a series like the others, like everything Bourdin was doing, it was disturbing and out of the codes enacted by the American magazine editor. The ‘provocative artist’ side of Bourdin was strongly disliked by many of them, which did not stop the series to appear with an offset blanket, embodied by the top Donna Jordan. It was the time of Andy Warhol and Antonio Lopez—an unforgettable and unequaled moment.”
2. “I remember my grandmother using pins to give a notched effect to her hair. I wanted to try to see if I could replicate what she did, but I got it wrong. Instead, the result was curly hair. I practiced this ‘new technique’ at Cacharel shows, on shoots with Sarah Moon, and I also used it in the Pop series for the French Vogue shot by Guy Bourdin. At the time hairdressers were using different sizes of curlers to curl, but after my ‘mistake,’ I’ve seen many people doing the same.”
3. “One of the moments I will not forget in my career was a shoot in Egypt for Marie Claire magazine with the photographer Sacha Van Dorssen. We were shooting up in a military zone and we were aware that it was forbidden, so we couldn’t stay, but Sacha was inspired by the location and she would not go anywhere else. A general picked me up and took me to the headquarters. I stood there for hours before returning to the team. So many risks for a fashion shoot! Fashion…”
4. “I worked a lot with Carine throughout my career, from Glamour to CR Fashion Book, and these are the moments that have marked and still mark my career today. The shots are always amazing and gorgeous and it’s nice to work with people you’ve known for a long time. We understand each other and we are rarely disappointed by the result.”
