Hall Ohara, the brainchild of ex-St Martin's students Steven Hall and Yuriko Ohara, have some interesting ideas. Sharing a love of absurdity this design duo explores notions of proportion, adds a touch of surrealism and pushes the result, it has to be said, beyond the limit.
While there is of course room in fashion for the bizarre and/or challenging, if this approach is to be successful on a commercial level the result needs to be wearable or, at the very least, well made. On the first count, Hall Ohara may have a market - in those who like their clothes a roomy size 40 plus. Although on the catwalk these garments were certainly eyecatching, it's a safe bet that the average person in the street will not wish to keep their trousers up by holding on to them or battle through acres of sleeve to find their small change.
On the second point, Hall Ohara really need to pull their socks - and trousers - up. Overlocked edges were left exposed and frayed, and seams puckered under the strain of too-tight stitching.
With a nod to the Dada and Surrealist schools of art, prints include a horse drawn carriage and Duchamps' urinal. Though with workmanship like this it would fair to say that, for now, they're just taking the p***.
