Hedi Slimane - Designer

Always wanted him at Armani, but he lacks the Italian touch, and I’m not convinced he could do fabrics as rich. It would be crazy as he’ll likely (and rightfully) gut the diffusion lines. Gutting EA/AX is crazier than putting him at Chanel.

Unfortunate to admit it, but that dreaded curse of aging hacks seems an unavoidable curse for these once leading creative. The likes of Armani/Yohji/Rei really have nothing left to give but the dreaded nostalgia.

Nostalgia and devoted brand loyalty to Gio still working, are the only thinnest of reasons why this brand is still cherished creatively. Current-day Armani mainline and Privé are painful to behold: Clownishly and at the same time, matronly proportioned; hideous, infantile color-palette and even worse prints; dated silhouettes; and just too bloated of showings… Nevermind the budget-level campaigns that plague the brand season to season now— nor how utterly pointless Emporio has become, while A/X was never even a creative contender even in its inception, so it doesn’t count as Armani. Except for the beauty and fragrance lines, it’s a moldy brand that’s in desperate need of creative revision. Hedi has a lot more in common with the Armani aesthetic than many would consider; like Armani at his best, Hedi’s best brand of subtle, quiet fashion revolution really is in all the details— and cuts, construction and fit, and everything looked so luxurious without any strain. He could revive that creative decay at the brand without relying on nostalgia— and no doubt, make the brand even more profitable with his modern vision. He has yet to stumble.

Hedi insatlled at Armani would be heaven.
