Meet the New Girl: Herieth Paul Advises Staying Away From McDonald’s

At the age of 14, rookie Hereith Paul walked into an open-call casting in her hometown of Ottawa, and got herself signed on the spot. Now, the 16-year-old is represented by Women Direct, under the watchful eye of nineties "It" model turned model booker Jenny Shimizu. Paul stayed mostly under the radar during her spring 2011 debut, walking for Phillip Lim and Lacoste, but she's now poised to hit it big in 2011. The Tanzania-born, Canada-raised model is featured in Diesel's new spring campaign, and she also walked in Lanvin's pre-fall show last week. Most impressively, Steven Meisel has taking a liking to her delicate, gamine looks, shooting her for Italian Vogue's January issue alongside the likes of Freja Beha and Fei Fei Sun. How were you discovered?
I went to an agency in Ottawa and asked if I could model, and they signed me right away.

You just shot with Meisel for Italian Vogue. What was that experience like?
Oh my God! Steven is a god. I didn't know what to expect when I first heard the news, but it was amazing just being there doing what I love with very amazing and professional people.

Do you personally find it difficult as a black model to get high-profile work versus your non-ethnic counterparts?
Well, I'm new to this industry and I never really thought of it that way. But no, I think if you work hard you get what you deserve.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Since it's winter, I love skiing. I'm a Canadian girl.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years I see myself in every different magazine.

Favorite junk food?
Kettle-corn popcorn (salt and sugar).

What's a typical outfit you'd wear on any given day?
My style is just Herieth. I have those days when I just want to look like a tomboy, but I also have those days where I want to dress up.

What would be the ultimate booking for you?
I think every booking I get is amazing, but I would like to book the Louis Vuitton show. I'm a big Louis fan.

Your skin is ridiculous. Tips?
Drink lots of water and stay away from McDonald's.

Lastly, any advice you'd give to young, aspiring models?
Every day is a blessing, cherish every moment, and never take anything for granted.
